PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Caleb Padilla (ranked 25069 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jake Melvin (ranked 3366 p4p, 0 weight class). Jake Melvin is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Caleb Padilla!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jake Melvin!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Chris Downing and Tiny Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Melvin closes the distance and clinches.

Melvin gets control of Padilla's arms and successfully pulls guard. Melvin will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Padilla is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Padilla missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Padilla could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Padilla drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Padilla jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Padilla stands up over Melvin, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Padilla has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Padilla lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Melvin can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Padilla controls the pace.
Padilla might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Melvin is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Padilla's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Padilla postures up in Melvin's guard and throws a big left but Melvin blocks it.
Padilla is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Melvin utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Melvin tries to circle away but Padilla has him pinned against the cage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Melvin tries a body shot but Padilla blocks it.

Padilla jumps guard and drags Melvin to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Padilla is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Melvin presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.
Melvin manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

Melvin manages to break the clinch.

Melvin moves into the clinch.
Padilla tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Melvin just stands there and leans against the cage.

Padilla pulls guard.
Padilla wants to get back to his feet but Melvin is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Melvin is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Melvin postures up in Padilla's guard and throws a big left but Padilla blocks it.
Melvin stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Padilla swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Melvin won't allow Padilla to get back to his feet.

Padilla pushes Melvin off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Melvin closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Padilla sneaks out the side door and pushes Melvin away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Padilla drives through and clinches with Melvin against the cage.
Padilla prevents Melvin from breaking the clinch.
Melvin looks winded!
Padilla blocking some punches.
Padilla lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Melvin.

Padilla gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Melvin regains guard.
Padilla not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Padilla with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

Melvin has momentary wrist control but Padilla slips an elbow through the middle.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Nice takedown defense from Melvin. No joy for Padilla on that attempt.

Melvin has Padilla up against the cage in a clinch.

Melvin breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Jake Melvin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Padilla jumps guard and drags Melvin to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Melvin stops Padilla from getting back to his feet.
Melvin is trying to control the action in half guard but Padilla is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Melvin is thwarting Padilla's attempts to control the position.
Padilla is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.

Melvin is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Melvin trying to mount his opponent but Padilla defends it.
Melvin is breathing heavily.
Melvin is looking to take a break and control but Padilla is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Melvin rushes Padilla and presses him up against the cage.

Padilla tightens his grip and picks Melvin up, before dumping him to the ground. Melvin manages to land in guard.
Padilla postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Melvin is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Padilla is aware though and is defending well.

Melvin has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Padilla can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Padilla stands up and waves to Melvin to follow him.

Padilla takes the fight into the clinch.
Padilla changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Melvin fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Melvin shoots in and bounces Padilla off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Padilla pushes Melvin off and scrambles back to his feet.

Padilla throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Melvin's waist but Melvin gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Padilla off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Caleb Padilla. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Padilla shoots for a double leg takedown but Melvin sprawls well. He's pushed Padilla's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Caleb Padilla is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Padilla darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Padilla's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

A close second round but Jake Melvin will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Padilla.

Melvin shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Padilla is trying to defend but Melvin finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Melvin thows a huge punch but Padilla dodges it nicely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Padilla has one foot on Melvin's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

Melvin decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Melvin stalling away here and it's allowed Padilla to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Melvin takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Padilla manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.

Padilla lands a takedown into guard.

Melvin pushes Padilla off and gets back to his feet.
Melvin throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.

Padilla gets tackled into the cage by Melvin. Melvin maintains the clinch.
A frustrated look appears on Melvin's face as he tries to break the clinch.

This has been an exciting period of action!

Padilla has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Melvin has momentary wrist control but Padilla slips an elbow through the middle.
Padilla is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Padilla content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

This is a sustained period of stalling by Padilla.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Melvin closes the distance and clinches.

Padilla breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Padilla gets caught flat footed, as Melvin shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Padilla manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Padilla has Melvin pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Melvin manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Padilla turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Melvin seems a little lost for a moment, as Padilla dominates the positioning.
Padilla seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Melvin for as long as he can get away with.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Caleb Padilla.
I think Padilla has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
