PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Bobby Sands (ranked 2179 p4p, 251 weight class) and Gregory McVaughn (ranked 3099 p4p, 338 weight class). Sands comes to the cage accompanied by Irish Soldier Song ... Free & Green. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Bobby Sands!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 10 - 2, fighting out of New York, Gregory McVaughn!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, John Roberts and David Schapiro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McVaughn tries to bum rush Sands with a series of wild strikes but Sands uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Sands dives in and grabs McVaughn's left leg, looking for a takedown. McVaughn pushes down on Sands's head and hops out.
Sands tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but McVaughn swivels and escapes.
Sands fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Bobby Sands. That's going to take a lot out of him.

McVaughn closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Sands tries to break the clinch but McVaughn is controlling the position.
McVaughn lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
McVaughn displaying some good clinch control by pressing Sands up against the cage.
McVaughn lands an uppercut.
McVaughn crunches a lovely knee into Sands's ribcage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
McVaughn tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Sands's elbow.
Sands is looking for a takedown.
McVaughn is defending well against a takedown attempt.
Sands blocks a punch to the side of the head.
McVaughn scores with an uppercut up the middle.

McVaughn pushes Sands back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Sands tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Sands can't get the takedown.
A right hand to the body from McVaughn.

Sands pulls guard effortlessly.
McVaughn controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Let's hope that McVaughn has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
McVaughn stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Sands swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
McVaughn throwing strikes but missing.
Sands keeping moving, preventing McVaughn from controlling successfully.
Sands is trying to keep McVaughn in close.
McVaughn seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Sands throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
McVaughn throws a strike but Sands rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
McVaughn wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
We're seeing a lot of stalling here from McVaughn.
McVaughn is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Sands throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
McVaughn has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
McVaughn working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Sands.
Sands throwing strikes but missing.
McVaughn is trying to control the position from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sands in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
McVaughn is trying to keep Sands in close.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Sands takes a jab right on the kisser.
Sands misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Sands gets cracked with a nice right hand there by McVaughn.
McVaughn lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
The fighters circle momentarily. McVaughn darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
McVaughn pushes Sands away with a front kick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gregory McVaughn dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Sands tries for a takedown but McVaughn sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Gregory McVaughn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sands with a lazy takedown attempt
and McVaughn counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Sands takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
Sands seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Sands is defended easily by McVaughn.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Bobby Sands. That's going to take a lot out of him.

McVaughn gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Sands tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. McVaughn just stands there and leans against the cage.
McVaughn tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Sands is trying to work for a single leg takedown but McVaughn pulls him back up using the underhooks.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sands takes an elbow to the forehead.


It looks like Bobby Sands has been cut.
McVaughn working some nice short punches in the clinch.
McVaughn has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
McVaughn scores with a nice hook to the head.
McVaughn lands a nice shot to the body.
McVaughn scores with an uppercut up the middle.

Sands goes for a takedown attempt but McVaughn pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
McVaughn throws a mid kick that lands with a slap.
McVaughn misses with a double jab.
An attempted straight right counter from Sands misses the target.
Sands tries for a takedown but McVaughn sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
A punch lands to the side of Sands 's head but he takes it in his stride.
McVaughn takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
McVaughn lands a two punch combo.
Sands closes this distance looking for a takedown but McVaughn circles away.
McVaughn uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Sands.
McVaughn goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
McVaughn connects with a solid leg kick.
McVaughn digs a good hook to Sands's body.
McVaughn connects with a crisp jab.
McVaughn rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Sands moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
A nice inside leg kick there by McVaughn. That's going to slow Sands down.

McVaughn scores with a jab. Sands acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Sands is trying hard to land a takedown here. McVaughn sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Gregory McVaughn is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Sands tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but McVaughn defends well and Sands ends up having to push McVaughn into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

McVaughn lands with a nice combination. Sands backs away looking to recover.


Sands is rocked!

Sands closes the distance and pushes McVaughn back into the cage.
Oh Sands is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Nice elbow from McVaughn.
The referee calls for McVaughn to work.
McVaughn pushes Sands back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.
McVaughn is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.
Sands takes a shot to the head.
Clinched against the cage, McVaughn lands a big elbow that drops Sands! The ref dives in to save him from more shots - Sands is complaining that he's OK but he was done.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:50 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Gregory McVaughn!
