Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Daniel Cormier (ranked 6760 p4p, 532 weight class) and Thor Lightenhammer (ranked 4667 p4p, 465 weight class). Lightenhammer is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Thunder Struck. The fight MMA fans around the world have waited their entire lives for!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Daniel Cormier!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Thor Lightenhammer!
The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Sergei Dronov and Konstantin Menshow.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lightenhammer misses with the combination.

Cormier wants to improve his position but Lightenhammer is controlling well.

Lightenhammer is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Cormier might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Lightenhammer is trying to control the action in half guard but Cormier is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Lightenhammer is working for a kimura but Cormier is defending it quite comfortably.

Lightenhammer wants to control but Cormier is keeping him busy.
Cormier's coaches at Grind Time Elite {$950} have been working on his defensive grappling in preparation for this fight so let's see if he can get out of this tricky position.
Cormier knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Lightenhammer on the ground.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Cormier wants to control the position but Lightenhammer says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.

Lightenhammer is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Cormier still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Cormier has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!
The referee asks Cormier politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Cormier prefers to stall for the moment though.

Lightenhammer is looking to stand but Cormier has his arms wrapped tightly around him, looking to prevent the damage.

Lightenhammer is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Cormier to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Cormier shrugs it off.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Lightenhammer working his ground and pound in the gym. So far it seems to be working well.
Lightenhammer prevents Cormier from getting the reversal.
Lightenhammer wants to get back to his feet but Cormier is holding on tight.
Cormier is controlling an arm, preventing Lightenhammer from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


No luck for Lightenhammer with that takedown attempt.
Cormier drops down looking for a counter takedown but Lightenhammer sprawls and moves away.
Lightenhammer tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Cormier defends well and Lightenhammer ends up having to push Cormier into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Lightenhammer shoots in looking for a takedown but Cormier manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Lightenhammer's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Cormier swings for the body but Lightenhammer moves out of range.
Lightenhammer tries to score a power double leg takedown but Cormier sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Lightenhammer somewhat.

Cormier drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Lightenhammer manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Cormier has Lightenhammer in his guard.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Cormier working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Lightenhammer doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Lightenhammer manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Well Cormier has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
