Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Gatekeeper Devil (ranked 5723 p4p, 528 weight class) and Joshua Navarrete (ranked 6999 p4p, 566 weight class). Gatekeeper Devil has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Gatekeeper Devil!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Joshua Navarrete!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Matheus Silva and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Devil shoots and misses
and Navarrete counters with a series of strikes. Devil will be more careful next time no doubt.
Gatekeeper Devil seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Devil closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Devil prevents a body shot from Navarrete.

Devil breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Devil has his takedown stuffed
and Navarrete counters with a one-two to the body.

Devil drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Navarrete wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Devil manages to pass to side control.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Devil tries to pass to full mount but Navarrete defends it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Devil with the ground and pound but Navarrete uses the opportunity to regain guard.

Navarrete manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Devil shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Navarrete counters with a series of strikes. Devil will be more careful next time no doubt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gatekeeper Devil. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Devil drives through with a takedown into guard.
Devil looking to sit in guard and control but Navarrete gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.


Devil looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Navarrete wanted to stand there but Devil had control of the position.
Devil wants to sweep here but Navarrete controlling him for the moment.

Devil is working an open guard so Navarrete takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Navarrete displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Devil.

and Navarrete counters with a one-two to the body.

Devil darts in looking for a takedown but Navarrete gets double underhooks and turns Devil into the cage.
Navarrete is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.
Devil misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
As Devil backs off Navarrete throws a huge counter combo but Devil manages to avoid it all.
Devil is breathing heavily.

Devil clinches.
Devil tries to pull guard but Navarrete holds him up against the cage and eventually Devil drops back down to his feet.
Navarrete struggles to land a body shot inside as Devil controls his hands.

Devil breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Devil tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Navarrete counters with a one-two to the body.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Navarrete is trying to push Devil away but Devil has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Devil fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Devil breaks the clinch.

Devil has closed the distance and engaged Navarrete in a clinch.
I was talking to Devil's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Navarrete wants to get back to striking at distance but Devil won't allow it.

Navarrete breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Devil darts in and clinches Navarrete up against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Devil shoots in and drives through. Navarrete sprawls well.
Navarrete circles away from the clinch attempt
and Navarrete counters with a two punch combo.

Devil shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Navarrete is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Devil advances to half guard.
Devil working over Navarrete with some ground and pound. Navarrete looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Devil trying to mount his opponent but Navarrete defends it.
Devil will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Navarrete keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Navarrete really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Devil. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Devil decides to return to a standing position.
Horrible takedown attempt by Devil or perhaps it was just good defense by Navarrete, which made it look bad.
As Devil backs off Navarrete throws a huge counter combo but Devil manages to avoid it all.
Devil tries to land a body kick
and Navarrete counters with a left and a right that stings Devil.

Navarrete gets caught flat footed, as Devil shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Devil working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Navarrete is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Devil loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Devil content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Navarrete has locked up a guillotine! Navarrete's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Devil is holding on here and Navarrete must be using up a lot of energy. Devil has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Navarrete gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!
