Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Julian Gniewek (ranked 4296 p4p, 429 weight class) and Gary Day (ranked 3263 p4p, 347 weight class). Day has chosen Last minute - Great day to choke you out as his entrance music. Gary Day acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the ring.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Julian Gniewek!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 18 - 3, fighting out of Helsinki, Gary Day!
The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Tarja Halkonen and Ben Zyskovitsi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gniewek tries to clinch up but Day circles away and keeps his distance.
Day feints the counter takedown.
Day with a body punch. A glancing blow.
Day throws a half hearted mid kick.
Day has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Gniewek is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Day keeps the fight on the outside.
Day changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Day connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Gniewek misses with a low kick.

Day drives through and clinches with Gniewek against the ropes.
Day lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Gniewek backwards.
Day on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Gniewek jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Day walks away with a smile on his face. Gniewek gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Gniewek checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
As Day backs away, Gniewek returns fire with a leg kick that just misses.

Gniewek moves into the clinch.
Day struggles to land a body shot inside as Gniewek controls his hands.
Gniewek presses Day against the ropes and delivers a mid-strength body shot.
Day lands with a short punch from the clinch.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Day is working on a single leg takedown against the ropes. Gniewek can't fight it off and eventually Day manages to take the fight to the floor. Gniewek looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Day throws an elbow that misses. Gniewek uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Day's guard. Nice move by Gniewek!


Day looking for subs off his back but Gniewek has passed one foot through into half guard.
Gniewek is trying to control. Day wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Gniewek is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Day is just riding it out for now. Gniewek eventually gives up the hold.

Gniewek is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Day doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Gniewek.

Gniewek is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Gniewek is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Day defends it well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gary Day dominated that round.

Gniewek misses with a kick to the body

Gniewek throws a chopping leg kick but Day manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
Day drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Gniewek defends it well.
Day fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Gniewek has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

Gniewek with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Day to score with a decent uppercut.
Day misses with a looping left.
Gniewek is looking to clinch but Day is avoiding it.

Day uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Gniewek has time to react.
Day has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Gniewek throws a leg kick which misses Day's front leg but catches the back leg as Day tries to avoid it.

Gniewek dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Day. That did some damage!
Day throws a hook to the side of Gniewek's head but Gniewek sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Day throws a solid leg kick but Gniewek takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Day.
Day takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Day takes a shot to the body in his stride.

Gniewek clinches.
Gniewek tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Day misses with a hook to the ribs.
Good anti-grappling being displayed by Day as Gniewek tries to tie him up.
Gniewek is trying to stall.
Gniewek jumps guard but Day stands there with Gniewek around his waist. Gniewek gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Day throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Gniewek decides to pull guard.
Day throwing strikes from guard but Gniewek blocks nicely.
Gniewek preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Gniewek is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Day with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Day lands a couple of digs.
Day in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Day trying to control the position from guard on top but Gniewek is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

A close second round but Gary Day will probably get the nod - 10:9.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Day feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Gnieweks jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!

A looping hook to the body misses from Day. Gniewek does a little dance to reset his feet.

Day escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Day checks a leg kick.
Day let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.
Gniewek ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Gniewek looks for the body kick but Day saw that one coming.
Day scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.

Gniewek gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Day is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Gniewek looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Day postures up in Gniewek's guard and throws a big left but Gniewek blocks it.
Gniewek will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Gary Day is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Day's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Gniewek is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Day is aware though and is defending well.

Day stands up over Gniewek, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Gary Day comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Day has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
