PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Kip Newman (ranked 24716 p4p, 0 weight class) and Todd Maxon (ranked 3833 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Maxon's choice of entrance music: Everything is Awesome. Kip Newman has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kip Newman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Todd Maxon!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Columbo Gatti and Bruno Lombardi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maxon wants to clinch up but Newman keeps it at a distance.

Maxon moves into the clinch.

Maxon gets control of Newman's arms and successfully pulls guard. Maxon will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Maxon working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Newman doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Newman manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Maxon is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Newman wants to stand but Maxon has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Newman stands up from Maxon's guard - Newman perhaps looking for a knockout.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Maxon tries to clinch but Newman is having none of it.
Maxon misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Newman seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Maxon looks winded!
Maxon is looking to clinch but Newman is avoiding it.
Newman tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Maxon manages to circle out of the way.
The fighters circling - Maxon throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Newman appears to be looking for a counter takedown.

Newman gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Maxon just leaning against Newman, taking a breather.
Newman really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Newman has Maxon pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Maxon manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Newman wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Maxon has him pressed against the cage.

Newman pulls guard successfully.

Newman has his hands on Maxon's head, controlling the position.

Newman has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Maxon can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Newman is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Newman working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Maxon has passed into half guard!
Newman regains full guard. Nicely done.
Maxon looking to sit in guard and control but Newman gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Newman postures up.
Newman working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Maxon's head.
Maxon wants to get back to his feet but Newman is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Maxon utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Maxon punching to the body, from the bottom.
Maxon has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Maxon looking to hit a scissor sweep but Newman is one step ahead there.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Newman drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Maxon manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Newman has Maxon in his guard.

Maxon postures up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Newman is really struggling to control Maxon but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Newman is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Newman is on top in guard.


Newman drops back, looking for a kneebar! Maxon looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Maxon looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Maxon!

Newman manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Newman trying to control the action but Maxon is working from the bottom.

Newman looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Kip Newman will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action!


A head kick by Maxon misses
and Newman counters with a series of strikes. Maxon will be more careful next time no doubt.

Maxon moves into the clinch.
Newman digs a right hand underneath Maxon's ribcage. Maxon let out a lung full of air as it connected.

Maxon pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Maxon tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Maxon tries to clinch up
and Maxon takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Newman misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Maxon tries to clinch up.
As Maxon looks to move away, Newman throws a big counter combo but Maxon just gets out of the way.
Maxon throws a leg kick
and Newman counters with a head kick. That will keep Maxon thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!
Maxon is breathing heavily.

Maxon instigates a clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Newman looks to throw an elbow but misses.
Come on Newman - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Newman taking a breather.
Newman jumps guard but Maxon stands there with Newman around his waist. Newman gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Maxon gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Newman regains guard.

Newman is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Maxon is aware though and is defending well.
Maxon postures up.
Maxon looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Maxon avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Maxon wants to control from the top but Newman keeps moving.
Newman will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Maxon loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Maxon is posturing up here but Newman has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Maxon tries to roll out but it's too tight and Maxon has to tap! Slick submission there by Newman!
