PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Maximo Meridio (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John McErlane (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McErlane comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Demanufacture by FEAR FACTORY kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! John McErlane has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Maximo Meridio!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, John McErlane!
The judges for this bout are Matti Vanhoillinen, Johanna Lukiainen and Ben Zyskovitsi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McErlane shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Meridio but Meridio pushes him off and we're back to square one.
McErlane is looking to clinch.
McErlane lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.


It looks like Maximo Meridio has been cut.
McErlane fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

McErlane looking for a takedown here - he's got it.

Meridio working for a triangle but McErlane defends it easily.
McErlane would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Meridio looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
McErlane wants to control from the top but Meridio keeps moving.

Meridio tries to bench press McErlane off him but McErlane keeps the position.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
McErlane in side control lands a decent elbow.
Meridio might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
McErlane is looking to take a break and control but Meridio is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Meridio is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McErlane wants to control but Meridio is keeping him busy.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
McErlane wants to stand but Meridio has him controlled and pulls him back into his guard.

McErlane is looking to stand up but Meridio won't let him.
Meridio is breathing heavily.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Meridio keeps the fight on the outside.
McErlane looks to land a combination but Meridio avoids it well.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Meridio keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Maximo Meridio has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John McErlane.

Meridio shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says McErlane as he avoids it easily.
McErlane moves in looking to clinch but Meridio pushes him off.

McErlane is trying to get back to his feet.

That's time! Meridio's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


McErlane looks to score with a jab to the body but Meridio is just out of range.
McErlane fails to land with a series of punches.
McErlane doesn't manage to clinch there - Meridio circles away.
Meridio shoots and misses

and McErlane counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

McErlane manages to pull guard.
Meridio trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but McErlane manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Meridio looking for submissions from the bottom but instead McErlane passes into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

McErlane stands up and we're back to a striking position.

McErlane lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Meridio circles away quickly and effectively.
McErlane misses with a series of wild punches.
McErlane tries to clinch up but Meridio circles away and keeps his distance.

and Meridio counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for McErlane!
McErlane tries to hold on but Meridio pushes him away.

Meridio goes for an armbar but McErlane turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from McErlane.

Meridio keeping moving, preventing McErlane from controlling successfully.

Meridio isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. McErlane stacks Meridio on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by McErlane!

McErlane decides to stand back up. McErlane steps back and let's Meridio get back to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
McErlane wants to clinch

and Meridio counters with a shoot takedown. McErlane fights it but they end up in guard.

Meridio has gone for a leg lock! McErlane slips out almost immediately though and dives into Meridio's guard.
McErlane wants to stand but Meridio has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
McErlane tries to free his leg and advance position but Meridio is retaining full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Meridio tries to land a sweep but no joy.

McErlane stands up and waves to Meridio to follow him.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from McErlane lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Meridio has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Meridio and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
Meridio tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but McErlane swivels and escapes.
McErlane misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
McErlane throws a series of punches but Meridio moves out of range.
McErlane has his takedown stuffed

and Meridio counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Meridio.
McErlane pulls Meridio in close to his closed guard and prevents Meridio from doing any damage or advancing position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Maximo Meridio will probably get the nod.

Meridio jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… McErlane is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by McErlane and Meridio has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

McErlane is trying to get back to his feet.
You can see the frustration on McErlane's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
McErlane manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

Meridio is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, McErlane has managed to free his arm - good work.

Meridio is looking for submissions but instead, McErlane has regained full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

McErlane lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Meridio!

McErlane is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Meridio can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Meridio is desperately trying to improve his position but McErlane has a good base and remains in mount.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Meridio is squirming around, avoiding McErlane's attempts to control the action.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Maximo Meridio.
I think Meridio has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
