Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Santo Daniel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Richard Vasquez!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Jeff Smith and Micheangelo Fripello.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Daniel shoots in for a takedown but Vasquez shows good takedown defense.
Vasquez throws a big counter head kick but Daniel avoids it with no problem.
Vasquez scores with a hook.
Vasquez shoots in but Daniel avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Daniel bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Vasquez explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!
Vasquez bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Vasquez closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Daniel to the mat! Daniel manages to get full guard.

Vasquez gets to his feet - Daniel follows without any prompting.
Vasquez throws a sloppy head kick
and Daniel makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Daniel is looking to slow Vasquez down with leg kicks.
Daniel will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Vasquez steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Daniel.

Daniel thuds his right hand into Vasquez's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.


It looks like Richard Vasquez has been cut.

Daniel closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Vasquez quickly recovers to half guard.

Vasquez has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Daniel is on him like a limpet, forcing Vasquez back against the cage.

Daniel has his foot on Vasquez's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Vasquez works his way back into a safe position though.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Still in half guard, Vasquez seems content to control.

Vasquez decides to stand up.
Daniel dives in and grabs Vasquez's left leg, looking for a takedown. Vasquez pushes down on Daniel's head and hops out.
As Daniel backs off Vasquez throws a huge counter combo but Daniel manages to avoid it all.
Daniel is breathing heavily.
Daniel defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Vasquez.

Daniel shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Vasquez is trying to defend but Daniel finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Vasquez jumps guard but Daniel stands there with Vasquez around his waist. Vasquez gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Daniel is trying to pull guard but Vasquez turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Vasquez's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Daniel has Vasquez pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Daniel pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Vasquez tumbling to the mat - Daniel dives into Vasquez's guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Daniel wants to control from the top but Vasquez keeps moving.

Vasquez shoots in looking for a takedown. Daniel tries to sprawl out of it but Vasquez keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Daniel manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Daniel stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Daniel wants it to stay on the feet.

Daniel throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Vasquez sees it coming and avoids it easily.

Daniel wants to take the fight to the mat but Vasquez manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Daniel swings wildly with an uppercut but Vasquez uses good head movement to avoid it.
Vasquez blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Vasquez lands with a short shot to the head.

Daniel manages to break the clinch.
Vasquez looks for a takedown but Daniel sprawls well.
Daniel tries to counter by clinching up but Vasquez breaks away and moves out of range.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

That was a close second round but I would say that Santo Daniel will probably get the nod.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Vasquez shoots in looking for a takedown. Daniel tries to sprawl out of it but Vasquez keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Daniel manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
No joy there for Daniel, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Daniel drives through and clinches with Vasquez against the cage.

Daniel's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Vasquez throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Daniel's waist but Daniel gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Vasquez off to one side.

Daniel shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Vasquez manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
