PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ramon Cassel (ranked 2303 p4p, 261 weight class) and Lamont King (ranked 5927 p4p, 486 weight class). King has chosen King For A Day - Green Day as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ramon Cassel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Lamont King!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, Richard Clark and Chris Edwards.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cassel takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.

Cassel gets a double leg takedown into King's guard.
King manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Cassel manages to get himself to full guard.

King must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

King drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Cassel dives on top into guard.

The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Cassel throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Cassel has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
King will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

King is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Cassel is aware though and is defending well.
King tries to land a sweep but no joy.

King is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Cassel missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
King manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Cassel manages to get himself to full guard.

Cassel can't keep his opponent in guard - King advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

King moves into full mount! Cassel won't be happy about that!
King blocks Cassel's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom.
Cassel wants to control but King is having none of it.
King can't control as he wanted to and Cassel manages to get the fight back to his half guard.

King looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
King trying to advance position but Cassel counters by regaining guard.

King throws an elbow that misses. Cassel uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in King's guard. Nice move by Cassel!


King escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Cassel gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Cassel with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

King looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

King working for a triangle but Cassel defends it easily.

King had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Cassel defends it easily.

King looking for a sweep. Not yet King, not yet.
King preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
King looking to hit a scissor sweep but Cassel is one step ahead there.

King looking for a guillotine here but Cassel defends easily.

King looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Cassel won't allow King to sweep him here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Lamont King will probably get the nod.
That's time! Cassel's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


King works the jab nicely.
King lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!


It looks like Ramon Cassel has been cut.
King has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Cassel dives in for a single leg takedown but King sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the ropes.
King connects with a nice looking jab.
King cracks Cassel with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
Cassel changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. King tries to avoid it but Cassel manages to keep hold of a leg and drag King to the ground. King escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
King lands a really nice looking cross but Cassel seems unphased.

This has been an exciting period of action!
No luck with that takedown attempt from Cassel.

King misses with a jab, cross combination.

King sizes up Cassel with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.

Cassel got a little sloppy there for a moment and King has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Cassel has managed to get both his arms back between King's legs - danger averted.
King wants to sweep but no luck.
King is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now King is on top in guard.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as King accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
King stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cassel swivels though and keeps the full guard.
King passes into half guard.

Cassel misses with some strikes from the bottom.

Lamont King showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the ring so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


King lands a jab.
King has been working his punching technique in the buildup to the fight and it appears to be paying off.
Nice jab there from King.
Cassel takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Lamont King seems to be getting the better of the standup.
King leaves Cassel with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
King might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.
King throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
King scores with a nice head shot.
King misses with a few strikes there.
King is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
Cassel tries for a takedown but King sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Cassel tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but King defends well and Cassel ends up having to push King into the ropes where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Cassel shoots in and bounces King off the ropes to secure the takedown into guard.

King working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Cassel doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but King is tightening it up a little... Cassel has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Cassel reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Cassel taps out! Nice BJJ there by King!

In his post fight interview, Lamont King gave a big smile as he said 'can you tell me what's "thank you" in your language'.
