PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ronaldo Souza (ranked 24483 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ken Ferrera (ranked 5527 p4p, 0 weight class). Ken Ferrera will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ronaldo Souza!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Ken Ferrera!
The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, William Gold and James Ackerman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Souza fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Ferrera looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.

Souza has Ferrera up against the cage in a clinch.

Souza escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Souza is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Ferrera's half guard.
Ferrera is looking to get back to is feet but Souza passes into side control.
Souza tries to move into full mount but can't pass Ferrera's legs.

Souza stands up and beckons Ferrera to his feet.
Good leg kick by Souza there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Ferrera has a takedown stuffed.

Ferrera shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Souza pinned against the cage. Souza gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Souza gets a takedown into half guard.
Ferrera is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Ferrera wants to control but Souza is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Ferrera moves into full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Souza is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Ferrera controls Souza momentarily but Souza frees himself.
Souza wants to get up but he can't break Ferrera's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Ferrera is trying to control the position but Souza postures up.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Souza shoots in looking for a takedown but Ferrera manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Souza's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Souza keeps the fight on the outside.
Souza misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Souza.

Souza throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Souza throws a series of punches but Ferrera moves out of range.
Nice sprawl there from Souza as Ferrera shoots in.

Souza bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Ferrera wants to get back to his feet but Souza is dominant here and he's now got Ferrera's back!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Souza is breathing heavily.

Ferrera covering up well under a barage of strikes.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Ferrera is defending well here and trying to improve his position.
Good control from Souza.
Souza scores with a nice shot to the head of his opponent. Ferrera is looking for a way out.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ronaldo Souza dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Souza drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Souza trying to control the action but Ferrera is working from the bottom.

Souza is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Ferrera has escaped the position, nice work there.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Ferrera tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Souza wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Souza sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Ferrera is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

Ferrera manages to work his way to half guard, despite Souza's best efforts.
Souza knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Ferrera on the ground.

Ferrera is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Souza is aware though and is defending well.
Souza is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Ferrera can do to turn this around?
Ferrera is breathing heavily.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Souza trying to control but Ferrera is working from the bottom.
Souza stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Ferrera swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Souza has a takedown stuffed.
Souza closes this distance looking for a takedown but Ferrera circles away.
Ferrera dives in and grabs Souza's left leg, looking for a takedown. Souza pushes down on Ferrera's head and hops out.

Ferrera wants to clinch up but Souza keeps it at a distance.

Ferrera clinches.

Souza breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Ferrera has Souza up against the cage in a clinch.
Ferrera gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Souza.

Souza misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Ferrera.
Souza jumps guard but Ferrera turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Ferrera wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Ferrera pulls guard.

Souza takes a decent strike to the side of the head.
Souza postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Souza controls from within his opponent's guard.
Ferrera wants to sweep but no luck.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Souza avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Souza is stalling in the full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ken Ferrera showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Ferrera tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
Ronaldo Souza overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Ferrera is looking to improve his position but Souza isn't that keen on the idea.

Souza moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Ferrera has worked his arm free - good work by Ferrera!

Ferrera is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Souza's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Souza lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Souza is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Ferrera wants to improve his position but Souza is controlling well.
Souza wants to get back to his feet.
Ferrera is staying active underneath Souza, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Ferrera tries to get to full guard but Souza has control of the leg.
Ferrera has hold of Souza's hands but Souza slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Ferrera is trying to stand up here but Souza is controlling him well.
Ferrera takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Souza decides to stand up.
Souza throws a lazy head kick
and Ferrera counters with a solid body kick.
Ferrera tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Ronaldo Souza is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Souza shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Ferrera as he avoids it easily.
Souza fails with the takedown.

Ferrera fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Souza avoids it really well and circles away.
Horrible takedown attempt by Souza or perhaps it was just good defense by Ferrera, which made it look bad.

Ferrera moves in looking to clinch but Souza pushes him off.
A solid body kick from Ferrera.

I would just about give that final round to Ken Ferrera.
I think Ferrera has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
