These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Velasquez closes the distance and clinches.

Velasquez ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Velasquez no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Sanford accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Sanford postures up in Velasquez's guard and throws a big left but Velasquez blocks it.

Sanford got a little sloppy there for a moment and Velasquez has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Sanford has managed to get both his arms back between Velasquez's legs - danger averted.
Sanford won't allow Velasquez to sweep him here.
Velasquez throws some sloppy strikes off his back.

Velasquez has his foot on Sanford's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Sanford works his way back into a safe position though.
Sanford has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Sanford working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Velasquez's head.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sanford throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Velasquez works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Sanford's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Velasquez wants to stand but Sanford is controlling the position.
Sanford postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Sanford works over Velasquez with some ground and pound from guard.
Sanford is in close to Velasquez's body, working some short punches and elbows.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Velasquez can do anything to dispel that myth.
Velasquez wants to get back to his feet but Sanford is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Velasquez is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Sanford gets to his feet. Velasquez looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Velasquez feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Sanford is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Velasquez presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.

Sanford looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Velasquez is defending well. Sanford quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Velasquez has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Sanford celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.
