PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Marilson Coutinho (ranked 3171 p4p, 140 weight class) and Anton Strålman (ranked 1624 p4p, 76 weight class). Strålman is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Three Kings. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 6 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Marilson Coutinho!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 9 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Anton Strålman!
The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Johanna Lukiainen and Ben Zyskovitsi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Strålman misses with a telegraphed body shot
and Coutinho counters with a left to the body.
Anton Strålman seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Coutinho shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Strålman but Strålman pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Strålman, right into the meat.
Strålman throws a sloppy head kick
and Coutinho counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Strålman finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.

It looks like Marilson Coutinho has been cut.
Strålman just misses with a punch to the body.
Strålman throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Coutinho attempts a counter takedown but Strålman avoids it well and moves away.
Strålman keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Strålman feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Coutinhos jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!

Strålman fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Coutinho.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Strålman loads up on a big right hand but Coutinho slips the punch.
Strålman doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Strålman lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
Strålman just misses with a punch to the body.
Coutinho throws a lazy right hand but Strålman sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

Strålman avoids a punch combination nicely.
Strålman swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Coutinho uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Strålman.
A slapping leg kick lands for Strålman.
Strålman throws a hook but Coutinho blocks it.
Strålman fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Coutinho has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Strålman throws a low kick but it's checked well by Coutinho.
Strålman wants to slow Coutinho down by chopping away at his legs.

Strålman delivers a nice body kick.

Coutinho fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Strålman manages to avoid it.

The crowd cheers as Coutinho lands an impressive looking overhand right. Strålman doesn't seem phased though.

Strålman slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Coutinho throws a jab when Strålman was well out of range.
Strålman connects with a leg kick. Coutinho looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
Strålman lands a nice shot that snaps Coutinho's head back.
Coutinho connects with a good right hand that stumbles Strålman. Strålman circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Strålman displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Coutinho.
Strålman feints a counter leg kick.
Strålman tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Coutinho takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Strålman's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Coutinho connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Strålman scrambles back to his feet.

Coutinho bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Coutinho checks the leg kick.
Coutinho changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Coutinho blocks a head kick by Strålman.
Coutinho throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Strålman swings and misses with a hook to the body.

and Coutinho cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Coutinho is looking to wear down Strålman with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
Coutinho has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Strålman finds it's way round the side to connect with Coutinho's head.

Coutinho goes for a double leg but Strålman avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the ropes as Strålman continues to drive forward.

It looks like Coutinho has been trying to sharpen up his punching technique, as it looks crisper than last time we saw him.

and Strålman counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Strålman lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Strålman has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Strålman is looking for a sweep. Coutinho is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Coutinho seems to be working for a kimura but Strålman defends the submission attempt.
Coutinho thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Coutinho wants to lay and pray for a moment but Strålman keeps working.

Coutinho wants to pass the guard but Strålman is defending well.

Coutinho is trying to work for a kimura but Strålman is defending well.
Strålman is trying to maintain the position but Coutinho is very close to passing his half guard.

That was a close second round but I would say that Marilson Coutinho will probably get the nod.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Coutinho bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Coutinho tries to counter with a takedown but Strålman is quick to defend against it.
Coutinho fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Strålman looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
A solid leg kick lands there for Strålman.
Strålman misses with a low kick as Coutinho jumps back.

and Coutinho decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Strålman's guard.

Coutinho thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Coutinho drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Strålman dives on top into guard.


Strålman got a little sloppy there for a moment and Coutinho has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Strålman has managed to get both his arms back between Coutinho's legs - danger averted.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Coutinho has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Strålman can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Strålman wants to get up but he can't break Coutinho's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Anton Strålman is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Strålman wants to stand but Coutinho is controlling his arm.

Marilson Coutinho has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Strålman really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Coutinho. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Coutinho is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Strålman is trying to control the action in half guard but Coutinho is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

We've been informed that Strålman has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Coutinho flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

Anton Strålman comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Strålman has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

After the fight, Anton Strålman was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
