PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Vaughn Mcknight (ranked 24688 p4p, 0 weight class) and Benjamin Gager (ranked 6243 p4p, 0 weight class). Benjamin Gager told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Vaughn Mcknight!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Benjamin Gager!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Columbo Gatti and Dean Styles.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mcknight rushes Gager and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Gager wants to take the fight to the mat but Mcknight manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Mcknight is trying to break free.
Gager stalling in the clinch but Mcknight improves position.
Gager has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Mcknight is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Gager manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Mcknight is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Gager is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Gager has escaped and now he's on top!

Mcknight is adopting a defensive guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gager stands and throws Mcknight's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Gager trying to control the action but Mcknight is working from the bottom.
Mcknight is looking for a sweep.
Gager trying to control the position but Mcknight is working away.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mcknight can't do much from the bottom here.
Mcknight is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Gager is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Gager tries to move to mount but Mcknight blocks the move with his legs.
Mcknight wants to get back to his feet but Gager drags him back down.
Mcknight is trying to control Gager's posture but Gager avoids it.
Gager laying and praying for a moment but Mcknight takes advantage and regains half guard.

Gager is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Mcknight is just riding it out for now. Gager eventually gives up the hold.
Mcknight wants to control but Gager is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Gager is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Gager is looking to take a break and control but Mcknight is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Gager smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Mcknight gets caught flat footed, as Gager shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Gager trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Mcknight had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Gager defends it easily.
Mcknight is trying to control the position but Gager postures up.
Gager scoring with punches to the head and body.
Gager sitting in guard, not really doing much.

Mcknight has his foot on Gager's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Gager works his way back into a safe position though.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Gager wants to pass the guard but Mcknight is keeping the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Mcknight shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Gager is trying to defend but Mcknight finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gager is looking for a sweep. Mcknight is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Gager keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.
Mcknight is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Mcknight lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Gager tries to kick Mcknight off but Mcknight keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Gager is looking to control Mcknight's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Gager avoid being mounted?
Mcknight landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Gager wants to get back to full guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Mcknight seems to be working for a kimura but Gager defends the submission attempt.
Gager is trying to get back to full guard.
Mcknight is trying to control the action in half guard but Gager is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Gager gets a clinch.
Gager dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage.
Mcknight letting Gager take a breather here.

Gager jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Mcknight walks away with a smile on his face. Gager gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
A lazy body kick from Gager

and Mcknight counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Mcknight.
Gager has had enough of the clinch but Mcknight keeps him there for the moment.
Gager has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Gager avoiding damage.

Mcknight gets control of Gager's arms and successfully pulls guard. Mcknight will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Mcknight wants to sweep here but Gager controlling him for the moment.
Gager controls from within his opponent's guard.
Gager missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

Gager shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Mcknight sprawls well. Mcknight wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gager gets slowly back to his feet.
Mcknight appears to be looking for a counter takedown.

Gager moves into the clinch.

Gager escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Gager pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.
Gager is trying to pull guard but Mcknight turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Gager keeps control of Mcknight as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Gager jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Mcknight walks away with a smile on his face. Gager gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Gager is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Mcknight scores with a couple of nice shots.

Mcknight looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Mcknight is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Gager has managed to free his arm - good work.
Gager is looking to control Mcknight's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Gager avoid being mounted?

Gager looks like he's trying to stand up.
Gager has hold of Mcknight's hands but Mcknight slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Mcknight is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Gager doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Mcknight.
Vaughn Mcknight overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Gager wants to hold on but Mcknight pushes him away.
Gager is just holding on here. Mcknight manages to take his back.
Gager has his hands over his head blocking the strikes from Mcknight.
Mcknight keeps control of the position as Gager tries to break free.
Mcknight is punishing Gager with some ground and pound.
Mcknight trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Gager doesn't escape.

Gager is in bad spot here.
The referee is taking a good look at Gager as he is on the wrong end of some big shots from Mcknight!
