PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Tad Pohl (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Julio Patino (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Julio Patino looks lathargic as he enters the arena. Wake up son, you're about to have a fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Tad Pohl!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Julio Patino!
The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Emerson Jorge and Paulo Santos.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pohl misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Pohl fails with the takedown.
Patino swats away the attempt to clinch by Pohl.
Pohl shoots in looking for a takedown. Patino tries to sprawl out of it but Pohl keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Patino manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tad Pohl. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Pohl throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Patino looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Pohl is pressing down on Patino's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Patino gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Pohl tries to close the distance and clinch but Patino swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Patino closes the distance and clinches up with Pohl, looking for a takedown. Patino pushes Pohl against the cage but Pohl circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Patino wants to control from the top but Pohl keeps moving.

Patino slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Pohl can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Patino controls the pace.
Pohl might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Patino lands a couple of decent looking shots.

Pohl not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

and Patino counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Patino blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Pohl fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Patino wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Pohl breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Pohl closes the distance but Patino moves to the side

and Patino moves into the clinch.

Patino is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Pohl can't fight it off and eventually Patino manages to take the fight to the floor. Pohl looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Pohl is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Pohl looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pohl with a couple of shots from the bottom there - nothing Patino can't handle though.
Pohl seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Pohl is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Patino tries for a takedown but Pohl circles away easily

so Pohl counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Pohl stands up over Patino, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Julio Patino dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Pohl scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Pohl wants to lay and pray for a moment but Patino keeps working.

Pohl is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Patino knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
A lull in the action here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Patino pushes Pohl away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Pohl gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Pohl knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Patino on the ground.
Pohl wants to stand but Patino is controlling his arm.

Patino is looking for a sweep. Pohl is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Pohl wants to take a breather but Patino is having none of it.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Pohl wants to stand up but Patino is controlling the position.
Patino is looking to control Pohl's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Patino avoid being mounted?
Pohl has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Patino can do anything to dispel that myth.
Pohl wants to control the pace but Patino is squirming around nicely.
Patino is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Pohl postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Patino looks a forlorn figure.
Patino is in all sorts of trouble here.
Patino is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Patino changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Pohl looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Pohl is keeping busy.
Patino scores with a nice shot to the head of his opponent. Pohl is looking for a way out.
Patino is working the ground and pound here and the referee is taking a close look at Pohl. He must escape soon or this one will be stopped.
You can see the frustration on Pohl's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

Pohl has the hand control, trying to stop the rear naked choke.

Patino is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Pohl has managed to free his arm - good work.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Pohl wants to clinch

and Patino counters by moving into the clinch.
Pohl blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Patino wants a takedown but no success here.
Pohl tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Patino just stands there and leans against the cage.
Patino has Pohl pressed against the cage.
Pohl fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Patino keeps control of Pohl as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Pohl has had enough of the clinch but Patino keeps him there for the moment.

Julio Patino comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Patino has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
