The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnson looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Smalls is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Johnson controlling the pace.
Johnson seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Smalls wants to control but Johnson is keeping busy.
Johnson perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Johnson's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Johnson wants to pass the guard but Smalls is defending well.

Smalls throws out a counter right but Johnson avoids it with no problem.

Smalls stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Smalls wants it to stay on the feet.
Smalls tries to close the distance and clinch but Johnson swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Johnson shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Smalls's guard.

Johnson looks for a takedown but Smalls sprawls well.

Smalls looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Johnson puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Smalls is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Johnson's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Johnson's back!
Smalls is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Johnson defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Smalls is pushing Johnson up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
