The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Johnson looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Smalls is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Johnson controlling the pace.
Johnson seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Johnson lands with a punch from half guard.
Well, if Johnson is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Smalls looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Johnson seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Smalls is trying to get back to full guard.
Smalls trying to control from the bottom.
Smalls moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Johnson is in close to Smalls's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Smalls not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Smalls wants to stand but Johnson is controlling the position.
Smalls is trying to keep Johnson in close.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Johnson fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Smalls to the ground. Johnson is now in Smalls's guard.
Smalls tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Smalls is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Johnson tries to stand but Smalls is controlling from the bottom.
Johnson is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Smalls wants to control the position but Johnson says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
Johnson lands with a punch from half guard.
Smalls wants to get back to his feet.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Smalls wants to control but Johnson is keeping busy.
Johnson perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Johnson's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Johnson wants to pass the guard but Smalls is defending well.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Johnson will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Smalls throws out a counter right but Johnson avoids it with no problem.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Smalls misses with a wild body shot.
Johnson appears to be looking for a big counter.
Smalls stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Smalls wants it to stay on the feet.
Smalls tries to close the distance and clinch but Johnson swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Johnson throws a quick counter head kick but Smalls was just out of range.

Johnson shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Smalls's guard.

Smalls bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Johnson's guard.

Johnson pulls Smalls in close to his closed guard and prevents Smalls from doing any damage or advancing position.

Smalls throws a big elbow that misses.
Johnson has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Smalls keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
A countering left hand to the body from Smalls misses.
Johnson looks for a takedown but Smalls sprawls well.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Boddah Johnson. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Johnson misses with a low kick.
Smalls shoots in but Johnson avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Johnson shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Smalls but Smalls pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Johnson slips a jab from Smalls.
Johnson lifts his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.
Johnson throws a head kick that misses.

Johnson shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Smalls looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Johnson puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Smalls wants to get back to full guard.
Smalls is still trying to improve position.
Smalls looks like he's trying to stand up.

Smalls is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Johnson's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Johnson's back!

Smalls is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Johnson defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.
Johnson is keeping busy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Teddy Smalls showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Smalls throws a series of punches but Johnson moves out of range.
Johnson slips a straight right by Smalls.
A punch combination from Johnson misses.
Johnson throws a right hand that Smalls ducks under and follows up with a left that Smalls also avoids with ease.

Johnson clinches up against the cage.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.
Johnson has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Smalls is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Smalls is pushing Johnson up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Johnson pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Smalls throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Johnson tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Smalls manages to circle out of the way.

An inside leg kick from Smalls misses.
Smalls throws a series of punches but Johnson moves out of range.
Smalls misses with a low kick.
Smalls looks to throw the jab but Johnson is out of range.
Johnson on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Johnson misses with an uppercut.
Smalls will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Johnson moves into the clinch.
Smalls tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Johnson smiles and moves away.

Smalls gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Smalls controls Johnson momentarily but Johnson frees himself.

Smalls is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Johnson slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Smalls striking off his back but it's not causing Johnson any problems.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Boddah Johnson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Johnson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Johnson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Smalls swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Johnson has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Smalls is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Smalls trying to keep a closed guard but Johnson is proving a slippery customer.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
