PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ellis Diaz (ranked 4862 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kaneda Shotaro (ranked 4793 p4p, 0 weight class). Kaneda Shotaro looks lathargic as he enters the arena. Wake up son, you're about to have a fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ellis Diaz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kaneda Shotaro!
The judges for this bout are Yuuki Gou, Hirohito Nitta and Shirou Masuda.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shotaro throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
It looked like Diaz was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Kaneda Shotaro seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Shotaro throws a series of punches but Diaz moves out of range.
Diaz tries to counter with a takedown but Shotaro is quick to defend against it.
Diaz shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Shotaro as he jumps to the side.
Shotaro misses with a two punch combination.

Shotaro closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Diaz quickly recovers to half guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Diaz is looking to improve his position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Diaz wants to control but Shotaro is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Diaz is trying to get back to full guard.

Diaz is looking to stand up but Shotaro isn't so interested in that idea.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
A swing and a miss from Diaz.
The fight stays on the outside here - Shotaro looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Diaz tries to sprawl but Shotaro drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Shotaro prevents Diaz from improving his position.
Diaz makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Diaz.

Shotaro looking to sit in guard and control but Diaz gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.


Diaz stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Diaz closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Shotaro's guard.

Shotaro has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Diaz has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.
Diaz really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Diaz misses with the head strike.

Diaz pulls Shotaro into guard.

Shotaro with a flurry of punches that miss.
Diaz tries to land a sweep but no joy.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Diaz bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Shotaro's guard.


Diaz drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Shotaro manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Diaz has Shotaro in his guard.


Diaz is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Shotaro defends well.
Diaz wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Kaneda Shotaro will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Diaz decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Diaz seems to be working for a kimura but Shotaro defends the submission attempt.

Diaz seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Shotaro does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Diaz looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Diaz stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Shotaro to get to his feet.

Shotaro closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Diaz has one foot on Shotaro's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

Diaz shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Diaz was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Shotaro is trying to control Diaz's posture but Diaz avoids it.

Diaz decides to stand back up.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Shotaro shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Diaz manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Shotaro keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.

Diaz drops down looking for an ankle pick but Shotaro pulls his leg out and moves away.
Shotaro keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Diaz throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Shotaro enables Diaz to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Shotaro manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Diaz thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Diaz is working Shotaro over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Diaz gets to his feet - Shotaro follows without any prompting.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ellis Diaz dominated that second round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!



Shotaro shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Diaz's guard.

Diaz is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Ellis Diaz overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Shotaro stands up over Diaz, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Diaz is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Shotaro can do to turn this around?
Diaz is looking to stand up but Shotaro won't let him.

Diaz stands and steps away. Shotaro gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Shotaro stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Shotaro wants it to stay on the feet.

Shotaro gets a double leg takedown into Diaz's guard.

Diaz is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Diaz tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Shotaro misses with a knee strike.
Shotaro's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
Diaz pushes Shotaro back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Shotaro has been looking to improve his clinch game in recent weeks. Diaz seems to have the measure of him in the clinch so far, so let's see if Shotaro can turn it around.

Diaz ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Diaz no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Shotaro in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Diaz working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Shotaro doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Shotaro manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Diaz is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Shotaro is aware though and is defending well.

Shotaro gets to his feet. Diaz looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Shotaro scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Diaz regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Shotaro.
Shotaro won't allow Diaz to sweep him here.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Ellis Diaz.
I think Diaz has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
