PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Avila Alvarez (ranked 2891 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shintaro Nomo (ranked 2797 p4p, 0 weight class). Alvarez comes to the cage accompanied by Barbarian by The Darkness. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 31 - 3, fighting out of London, Avila Alvarez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 38 - 16 - 1, fighting out of London, Shintaro Nomo!
The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, Andrew Berry and Colin Fotheringham.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alvarez walks into a left hand.
Alvarez throws a leg kick
and Nomo counters with a straight right hand.
Alvarez lands with a kick to the temple. Nomo shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"


It looks like Shintaro Nomo has been cut.
Alvarez looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Nomo is fending him off so far but Alvarez persists. Nope, Nomo circles away and we're back to standing.
Alvarez shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Nomo as he avoids it easily.
Alvarez looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

and Nomo counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Nomo works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
We've been hearing reports that Alvarez has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Shintaro Nomo seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Alvarez goes for a double leg but Nomo avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Nomo continues to drive forward.

Nomo scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.

Alvarez lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Nomo circles away quickly and effectively.

Nomo keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Alvarez darts in looking for a takedown but Nomo gets double underhooks and turns Alvarez into the cage.
Alvarez uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Nomo.

and Nomo counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Alvarez shoots in but Nomo avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Nomo tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Alvarez avoids it.
Alvarez is looking for a takedown.
Alvarez blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Nomo misses with an elbow over the top.
Nomo throws an elbow that misses.

Alvarez gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Nomo working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Alvarez doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Alvarez manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Nomo has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Alvarez can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Nomo has momentary wrist control but Alvarez slips an elbow through the middle.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Alvarez connects with a couple of short punches.

Nomo escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Alvarez gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Nomo bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Alvarez's guard.

Alvarez has his foot on Nomo's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Nomo works his way back into a safe position though.
Nomo is standing up over Alvarez. Alvarez looks to escape but Nomo dives into side control.
Alvarez managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Nomo.

Alvarez is trying to control Nomo's posture but Nomo avoids it.

Nomo thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Nomo wants to take a breather but Alvarez is having none of it.

The fighters circle momentarily. Nomo darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.

Nomo lands a nice shot that snaps Alvarez's head back.

Nomo feints a counter leg kick.
Alvarez looks for a takedown but Nomo sprawls well.

Nomo throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Nice sprawl there from Nomo as Alvarez shoots in.
Alvarez changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Nomo tries to avoid it but Alvarez manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Nomo to the ground. Nomo escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Nomo! But no joy.

Alvarez shoots in looking for a takedown. Nomo tries to sprawl out of it but Alvarez keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Nomo manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Avila Alvarez is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Shintaro Nomo showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Alvarez decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Alvarez looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Nomo with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Alvarez is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Nomo sees it coming and defends easily.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Nomo wants to control but Alvarez is keeping him busy.

Nomo is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Alvarez can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Nomo lands a big shot there that rocks Alvarez but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

Well Nomo has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Shintaro Nomo opened up his post fight interview with a scream to camera that he wants a title shot! Whether he deserves the shot will be up to the management of the organization, so I guess he'll have to wait and see.
The defeated Avila Alvarez had this to say: 'I'm so pissed, man. I trained so hard for this camp too.'.
