PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Otto Downs (ranked 24797 p4p, 0 weight class) and Trevor Martin (ranked 3036 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Otto Downs!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Trevor Martin!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Martin darts in and clinches Downs up against the cage.
Martin lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Downs backwards.
Downs wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Martin has him pressed against the cage.

Martin turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Downs defending against the ground and pound.
Martin takes a little break here. Downs wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
You can see the frustration on Downs's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Martin tries to advance to mount but Downs denies him.
Downs is trying to get back to his feet.

Martin working away.
Martin just content to control the position.
Martin tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

Martin is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Downs knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Martin working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Martin remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Martin is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Downs knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Martin swings around for an armbar but Downs sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Martin's guard.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Downs prevents Martin from getting back to his feet.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Martin can do anything to dispel that myth.
Martin has his hands on Downs's head, controlling the position.
Downs throwing strikes but missing.
Downs trying to control the position from guard on top but Martin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Downs is looking to stand up but Martin won't let him.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Martin is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Martin is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Martin wants to break free but Downs has control.

Downs tries to sprawl but Martin drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Martin stalling away here and it's allowed Downs to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.

Martin stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Downs shoots in for a takedown but Martin shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Martin fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Downs sprawls well initially but Martin persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Downs is looking for a sweep. Martin is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Martin decides to stand and escape the position.

Martin closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Downs managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Martin.
Martin scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Downs to see if he's OK.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Martin working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Martin decides to stand back up. Martin steps back and let's Downs get back to his feet.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Downs enables Martin to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Downs manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Martin slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Martin shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Martin showed some decent athleticism there.

Trevor Martin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Martin takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Martin thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Downs's head.

Martin stalling away here and it's allowed Downs to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Downs really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Downs can't keep his opponent in guard - Martin advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Downs looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Martin wants to free his trapped foot but Downs is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Martin is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Martin in particular looking to stall.

Martin wants to work for an arm triangle but Downs is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Martin is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Downs doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Martin.
Martin slips a nice elbow through Downs's hands, connecting with Downs's forehead.

Martin missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.

Martin is looking for a kimura but Downs is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Martin to get the leverage.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Martin in particular looking to stall.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Trevor Martin has got the better of the ground game so far.

Trevor Martin comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Martin has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
