Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Ricardo Escalante!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 5 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Jonathan Maia!
The judges for this bout are Bart Greer, Michael Johnstone and Santiago Holmes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A slapping leg kick lands for Escalante.

Escalante closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Maia did well to prevent Escalante getting side control.
Maia is looking for a sweep. Escalante is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Escalante in particular looking to stall.
Escalante prevents Maia from improving his position.
Escalante thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Maia's head.
Escalante wants to stand but Maia has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Escalante stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Maia to get to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Maia closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Escalante keeping control of the position.

Maia is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Maia wants to take a breather but Escalante is having none of it.
Escalante is looking to improve his position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Escalante is concentrating on defense, preventing Maia from advancing position.
Maia is pressing down on Escalante's thigh, looking to free his foot. Escalante is holding on for now.
Escalante looks like he's trying to stand up.
Escalante really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Maia is working for a kimura but Escalante is defending it quite comfortably.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Maia seems to be working for a kimura but Escalante defends the submission attempt.
Escalante is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Escalante on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Escalante tries to get out of the position.
Maia not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Maia looks to land a strike but Escalante avoids it nicely and regains full guard.

Escalante has his foot on Maia's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Maia works his way back into a safe position though.
Maia in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Escalante has control of Maia's left arm, preventing Maia from doing any damage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Maia works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Maia works his way into side control.

Maia is working to tighten his grip on Escalante's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Escalante has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Maia is really squeezing tight and eventually Escalante passes out! Maia breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:36 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Jonathan Maia!
