PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Josh Smyth (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sham Wowner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wowner comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Empire kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Both fighters really staring eachother down here, as Sham Wowner enters the cage!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Josh Smyth!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Sham Wowner!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, William Gold and James Ackerman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smyth fails with the takedown.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Smyth.
Wowner lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Smyth circles away quickly and effectively.
Wowner lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Smyth throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Wowner misses with a looping left.

Wowner gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Smyth wants to pass the guard but Wowner is keeping the position.

Smyth postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Wowner is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Smyth, into his guard.

Wowner thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Smyth can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Wowner controls the pace.

Wowner tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Wowner has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smyth tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Wowner presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Wowner wants to finish this one by submission but Smyth is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Wowner.
Smyth is trying desperately to improve position.

Wowner has control of Smyth's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Smyth regains control of the situation pretty easily.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Smyth tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Wowner paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Wowner lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Smyth circles away quickly and effectively.
Smyth fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Wowner throws a nice looking combination but Smyth bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Smyth looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Wowner is fending him off so far but Smyth persists. Nope, Wowner circles away and we're back to standing.

Wowner throws a good cross that connects.
Wowner throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Smyth throws a left and a right that both miss
and Wowner counters with a nice uppercut.
Smyth tries for a takedown but Wowner circles away easily
and Wowner cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Wowner looks to throw the jab but Smyth is out of range.

and Wowner counters with a series of strikes. Smyth will be more careful next time no doubt.

Wowner is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Smyth sees it coming and defends easily.

Wowner decides to stand and escape the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sham Wowner dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!

Smyth misses with an uppercut. Wowner saw that one coming.
Smyth shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Wowner counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.

Smyth shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Wowner counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Smyth is looking for a sweep. Wowner is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Wowner wants to take a breather but Smyth is having none of it.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Smyth wants to improve his position but Wowner is controlling well.

Wowner decides to stand and escape the position.

The fighters circle momentarily. Wowner darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Smyth displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Wowner throws out the jab.

and Wowner counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Wowner.

Wowner is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Wowner had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Smyth is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Wowner Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Smyth's back instead.
Wowner tries to get the hooks in deep but Smyth pushed the leg off.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Smyth has his takedown stuffed

and Wowner decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Smyth's guard.

Wowner gets to his feet - Smyth follows without any prompting.

Smyth fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Wowner sprawls well initially but Smyth persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Smyth seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Wowner is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:48 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Josh Smyth!
