PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between john spartin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and JJ Sutton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, john spartin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, JJ Sutton!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Skip Squint and Steve Erwin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
spartin fails to land the takedown.

Sutton feints and as spartin raises his hands in defense, Sutton changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
spartin tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Sutton stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. spartin swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Sutton sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed spartin's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Sutton postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for spartin to stand up.

Sutton shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Sutton accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

spartin looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

spartin is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Sutton has hold of spartin's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and spartin manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
spartin wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.

spartin rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
Sutton looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.

Sutton passes the guard and advances to mount!

Sutton is going olschool here, as he tries to force spartin to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so spartin shrugs it off.

spartin is in all sorts of trouble here.

Sutton controlling the pace for now.

Sutton swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and spartin is now in Sutton's guard. A big mistake from Sutton there, giving up the dominant position!

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Sutton is defending against the submission attempts here by spartin.

spartin knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Sutton on the ground.
Sutton keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Sutton tries a head kick but it misses.
john spartin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

and Sutton counters with a nice double leg into guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

JJ Sutton dominated that round.

spartin tries to kick Sutton off but Sutton keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Sutton fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with spartin, pushing him back against the cage.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
spartin wants a takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for john spartin. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Sutton has hold of one of spartin's legs. spartin is fighting the takedown attempt but Sutton gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Sutton won't allow spartin to get back to his feet.
spartin can't keep his opponent in guard - Sutton advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Sutton is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but spartin still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, spartin has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!
Sutton is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked spartin off and has taken his back!

Well, with Sutton on his back, surely it's only a matter of time before spartin is tapping out... Can he escape the position?

Sutton is working on the RNC. He looks like he's got it but spartin won't tap... Oh, he's out! The ref rips Sutton off his unconscious opponent!
