The judges for this bout are Peter Branson, Michael Johnstone and Sandra Marshall.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ruiz lands with a good body shot.
Peyton throws a head kick but Ruiz moves out of range.
Mervin Ruiz seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Peyton moves into the clinch successfully.
Ruiz has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Peyton breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Peyton shoots in looking for a takedown but Ruiz manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Peyton's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Ruiz has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Peyton is landing a low percentage of strikes.

Peyton's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Ruiz throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Peyton quickly followed up with a counter body kick but doesn't connect.
Mervin Ruiz is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

and Peyton counters with a takedown into side control.
Ruiz tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.

Ruiz throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Ruiz scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.

As Ruiz looks to move away, Peyton throws a big counter combo but Ruiz just gets out of the way.
Ruiz misses with the combination.
Peyton shoots in but no luck this time.

Ruiz shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Peyton eats them both and turns towards Ruiz to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Ruiz attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.

Peyton shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Ruiz is trying to defend but Peyton finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Ruiz has one foot on Peyton's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

Ruiz goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.

Ruiz goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
Peyton tries to clinch up but Ruiz circles away and keeps his distance.

Ruiz gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.

Peyton walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Ruiz misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Ruiz manages to escape and get back to his feet.

Peyton dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Ruiz throws a mid kick that lands with a slap.
Ruiz connects with a crisp jab.
Ruiz throws the kick towards the body but Peyton avoids it.
Peyton is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Ruiz.
Ruiz misses with a two punch combination.
Ruiz blocks a head kick by Peyton.
Ruiz is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round! Peyton had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into pâté.

Peyton closes the distance and pushes Ruiz back into the cage.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Peyton will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Ruiz up against the cage.

Ruiz has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Peyton moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
