PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Patricio Santos (ranked 3282 p4p, 286 weight class) and Sandy Jones (ranked 5996 p4p, 410 weight class). Jones has chosen Can't leave without it as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Patricio Santos!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Sandy Jones!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Mauricio Rocha and Seu Braga.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Santos feinted with a counter takedown.
Jones shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Santos as he jumps to the side.
Santos changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Jones tries to avoid it but Santos manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Jones to the ground. Jones escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Nice sprawl there from Jones as Santos shoots in.
Santos throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Jones's waist but Jones gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Santos off to one side.
Jones is looking for the big counter here.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Patricio Santos. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Jones tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Santos defends well and Jones ends up having to push Santos into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Jones has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Santos is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Jones shoots in for a double leg but Santos sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Jones closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Santos is pressed up against the cage. Jones has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Santos down to the mat. Santos avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Sandy Jones seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Jones throws a body kick that misses.
Jones tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Santos swivels and escapes.
Santos shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Jones as he jumps to the side.
Jones shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Santos but Santos pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Jones looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Santos tries to close the distance and clinch up but Jones swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Santos shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Jones scores with a head kick. Santos tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.

Jones moves into the clinch.

Jones lands with a right to the head.
Jones creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Santos's defenses.


It looks like Patricio Santos has been cut.

Santos pulls Jones into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Santos throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Santos is breathing heavily.
Santos can't keep his opponent in guard - Jones advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Jones with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Jones throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Jones missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Jones is controlling the pace.
Jones prevents Santos from standing back up.
Jones not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Jones seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Jones is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Jones tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Santos tries to hold on but Jones pushes him away.
Jones prevents Santos from getting the reversal.
Jones sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
It looks like Jones might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Santos is trying to escape the mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jones misses with a takedown attempt - Santos sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Santos is looking to clinch but Jones is avoiding it.

Jones's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Jones gets caught napping as Santos dives in and scores a takedown. Jones manages to retain guard.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Jones manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.

Jones breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Jones is defended easily by Santos.
Santos tries to counter with a takedown but Jones is quick to defend against it.
Patricio Santos has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Sandy Jones.

Santos closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Jones's guard.
Santos trying to control the position from guard on top but Jones is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Jones has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Jones escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Santos gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Jones wants to stand but Santos is controlling the position.

Jones is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Santos is controlling him.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Jones shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Santos defends it nicely.
Jones is breathing heavily.

Jones looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Santos changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.

Santos closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Jones tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.
Jones has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Jones defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Santos's arms.
Jones trying to control the position but Santos manages to sink in the hooks.

Santos tries to keep control of the position but Jones is staying busy.
You can see the frustration on Jones's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
Santos tries to get the hooks in deep but Jones pushed the leg off.
Santos is trying to stick to Jones's back but Jones is turning into Santos. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Santos's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Jones.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Jones gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Jones misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Santos rushes Jones and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Patricio Santos will probably get the nod.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Jones tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Santos defends well and Jones ends up having to push Santos into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Jones closes this distance looking for a takedown but Santos circles away.
Sandy Jones seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Santos gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Santos decides to pull guard.
Jones throws a strike but Santos rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Santos wants to stand and escape but instead Jones has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Jones uses his free foot to push down on Santos's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Santos.

Santos has worked his way to half guard, taking advantage of Jones's lack of action.
Santos wants to improve his position but Jones is controlling well.
Jones slips a nice elbow through Santos's hands, connecting with Santos's forehead.
Jones looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Jones goes for a double leg but Santos avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Santos continues to drive forward.

Jones has Santos pressed against the cage, preventing Santos from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

And that's the end of the fight!
Patricio Santos showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Santos has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
