PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Cameron Johnson (ranked 4575 p4p, 0 weight class) and Zack Wave (ranked 4530 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Cameron Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Zack Wave!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Daniel Franklin and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wave looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
No joy there for Wave, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
An attempted straight right counter from Johnson misses the target.

Wave clinches with his opponent.
A body shot lands from Wave.
Wave is struggling to control the position.
Johnson takes an elbow to the forehead.


It looks like Cameron Johnson has been cut.
Johnson drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Wave gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Wave throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Johnson blocks it with crossed arms.
Johnson is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Wave gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Wave is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Wave thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Johnson's head.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Johnson takes the fight into the clinch.
Johnson goes for a takedown in the clinch but Wave prevents it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Cameron Johnson. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Wave lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.

Johnson breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Wave digs a right hand underneath Johnson's ribcage. Johnson let out a lung full of air as it connected.

Wave lands a left hand that snaps the head of Johnson backwards.

Johnson shoots in looking for a takedown but Wave manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Johnson's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Wave lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Johnson backwards.

A right hook to the body lands for Wave.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
A shot in the inside from Wave.
Johnson jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Wave walks away with a smile on his face. Johnson gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Johnson avoids a wild elbow strike from Wave.
Wave prevents a takedown attempt there.
Wave tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Johnson avoids it.
Johnson can't break the clinch.
Johnson wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Wave has him pressed against the cage.

Wave breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
A head kick misses from Wave.

Johnson rushes Wave and presses him up against the cage.

Wave gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Wave is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Johnson wants to sweep here but Wave controlling him for the moment.

Wave drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Wave jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Zack Wave showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!



Johnson closes the distance and pushes Wave back into the cage.
Johnson tries to land knees in the clinch but Wave avoids the damage to the body.

Wave pulls guard successfully.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Wave manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Johnson manages to get himself to full guard.

Johnson wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Wave is now in half guard.
Johnson is not content to let Wave control the position.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Johnson is trying is best to control the position here.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Johnson has hold of Wave's hands but Wave slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Wave seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Johnson tries to get to full guard but Wave has control of the leg.
Wave is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Johnson is refusing to be controlled, as Wave sits in half guard.

Wave wants to work for an arm triangle but Johnson is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Johnson trying to hold on to Wave's head to control him but Wave postures up.

Wave looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Johnson with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Johnson wants to get back to his feet.
Wave is looking to take a break and control but Johnson is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Wave throws a nice inside leg kick.
Johnson takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Johnson lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Johnson fails with the takedown
and Wave counters with a head kick. That will keep Johnson thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!

and Wave moves into the clinch.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
A frustrated look appears on Johnson's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Wave throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
Wave misses with an elbow over the top.
Wave creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Johnson jumps guard but Wave turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Cameron Johnson. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Johnson is fighting off a takedown attempt but Wave is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Johnson to the mat. Johnson regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Wave is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Zack Wave comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Wave has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
