The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gomez misses with a double jab.
Pencil shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Gomez as he avoids it easily.
Pencil is looking to clinch but Gomez is avoiding it.
Pencil closes this distance looking for a takedown but Gomez circles away.
Pencil fails with an attempt to clinch.
DJ Pencil seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Pencil.
Takanori Gomez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of DJ Pencil.
Gomez wants to land a leg kick but Pencil is out of range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gomez will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Nice combo by Gomez! Oh, that's hurt him - Pencil falls to the canvas and Gomez follows him into side control.

It looks like DJ Pencil has been cut.
Pencil misses with a strike from the bottom.
Pencil tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Gomez presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Gomez stands up from mount. Strange move.
Pencil tries to clinch up.
Pencil throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Gomez's waist but Gomez gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Pencil off to one side.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Pencil shoots in for a takedown but Gomez shows good takedown defense.
Pencil looks gassed!
Gomez lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Pencil tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
Pencil fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Gomez is throwing a storm of strikes! Right hook, left hook and follows it up with a spinning back fist! Pencil hits the canvas like a rag doll! And just like that, this one is over!
