The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Newton wants to clinch. Exvanderson tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Newton counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Exvanderson's guard now. Exvanderson wants to sweep but no luck. Newton tries to stand but Exvanderson is controlling from the bottom. Newton wants to pass the guard but Exvanderson is keeping the position. Newton is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Newton looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Newton stopping the sweep attempt from Exvanderson. Newton must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
That's one minute gone in the round. Exvanderson has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Newton can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Exvanderson is breathing heavily. Newton looking to pass the guard. Newton really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Exvanderson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground. Exvanderson catches Newton with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! Newton steps back and let's Exvanderson get back to his feet.

Exvanderson didn't expect that. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! There's a bit of a scramble here and now Exvanderson is on top in guard.

Newton is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Exvanderson gets his way!

A nice inside leg kick there by Exvanderson. That's going to slow Newton down. Exvanderson closes the distance looking to clinch and Newton holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch. A hook to the body from Exvanderson.
Exvanderson tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage. Newton wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Newton is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though. Exvanderson digs a right hand into Newton's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Newton's gas tank. Exvanderson lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Newton or not. Exvanderson unloads a knee to the mid-section. Newton lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh. A nice right hand lands inside from Exvanderson. Newton tries for a takedown but Exvanderson manages to get underhooks.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Newton gets a clinch. Newton tries to pull guard but Exvanderson holds him up against the cage and eventually Newton drops back down to his feet.

Jones fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. swanson sprawls well initially but Jones persists and gets the takedown into half guard. swanson looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight! swanson manages to escape and get back to his feet! Jones tries to land a front kick but swanson steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed. A good leg kick by Jones. swanson tries to clinch but Jones is having none of it. swanson throws a series of strikes that have Jones backpedaling.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ohhhhh! A huge head kick from Clifford! Simpson is out on his feet! Clifford rushes in and throws more strikes. The ref is looking closely - Simpson is covering up but the punishment is just too much and the ref steps in to stop the fight! Simpson is staring into space, just thankful that the beatdown has ended. Brutal finish.
