The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Smith, right into the meat.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Vargas.
The ground and pound from Vargas seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Smith is trying to control Vargas's posture but Vargas avoids it.
Smith gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Vargas thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Smith's head.

Vargas stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Smith swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Vargas trying to control the position from guard on top but Smith is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Vargas uses his free foot to push down on Smith's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Smith.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Vargas seems to be working for a kimura but Smith defends the submission attempt.

Smith has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Vargas can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Smith working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Vargas doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Vargas manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Vargas stands and steps away. Smith gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Smith fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Vargas tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Smith was well out of range. Poor timing from Vargas.
Adam Smith is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Vargas takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Smith pushes Vargas away with a front kick.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
A head kick from Smith lands but Vargas takes it in his stride.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Sascha Kroener.
