2 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, David Poulain! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Raul Santiago! The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Elvis Blanc and William Peck.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nice sprawl there from Santiago as Poulain shoots in. Santiago throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Poulain uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Santiago.
Santiago throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Poulain looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Santiago is fending him off so far but Poulain persists. Nope, Santiago circles away and we're back to standing. Santiago lands with an overhand left. Poulain looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Santiago! Poulain is going olschool here, as he tries to force Santiago to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Santiago shrugs it off. Santiago is looking to get to half guard. Poulain throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Santiago because Poulain loaded up on that one. Santiago is squirming around, avoiding Poulain's attempts to control the action. Poulain throws a strike there. Santiago manages to avoid it well and slips a leg under to get to half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ground and pound from Poulain. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Poulain lands strikes from half guard. Santiago regains full guard. Nicely done. Poulain trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Poulain throwing strikes from guard but Santiago blocks nicely. Poulain stopping the sweep attempt from Santiago. Poulain postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Santiago can do anything to dispel that myth. Santiago wants to sweep here but Poulain controlling him for the moment. Santiago uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Poulain ducks under a wild hook from Santiago. Raul Santiago is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Poulain takes one to the side of the head.
Poulain slips a straight right by Santiago. Santiago ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Poulain moves away. Santiago swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Poulain fails to land the takedown. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for David Poulain. That's going to take a lot out of him. Santiago dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Poulain is breathing heavily. Santiago's corner calls for a 1-2. Santiago obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Santiago throws out a loose jab but Poulain uses good head movement to avoid it. Santiago swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Poulain fails with the takedown. Poulain closes this distance looking for a takedown but Santiago circles away. Santiago lands a slapping body shot.
Poulain takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Poulain ducks under a wild hook from Santiago. Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Santiago!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Santiago lands a big uppercut and Poulain crumbles to the floor! The ref thinks about stopping the fight but Poulain looks OK. Santiago waves Poulain back to his feet!
Poulain is rocked!
It looks like David Poulain has been cut. Poulain walks straight into a right hand from Santiago - that's dropped him! Santiago jumps into mount and starts pounding away - can he finish?! More strikes go undefended and the referee has to dive in to save Poulain from any more punishment! Poulain complains about the stoppage but falls over as he tries to stand back up, so it was clearly a good stoppage.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ramirez throws an overhand right from the outside, which connects and sends McKnight stumbling backwards into the cage! McKnight bounces back off the cage towards Ramirez, who cracks him with a two punch combination that drops him to his knees! Ramirez lands two more shots before the referee has chance to intervene - what a finish! Ramirez celebrates with his corner as the crowd cheer loudly.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:05 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Jesus Ramirez!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ronin shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Shaw looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this! Ronin passes Shaw's left leg - he's now in half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Shaw is in trouble now - Ronin has advanced to mount! Shaw has given up his back - I don’t know if this is a deliberate ploy to try and escape or if he is just struggling down there.
Shaw won't enjoy being in this position. Ronin looking for the choke. Oh... he's slipped the arm under the neck - Shaw is tapping - it's over boys! Ronin picks up the submission victory!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Benoit keeps the fight on the outside. Liddel moves in looking to clinch but Benoit pushes him off. Liddel connects with a jab. Horrible takedown by Benoit or perhaps it was just good defense by Liddel which made him look bad. We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Benoit has eaten all the pies! Liddel lands a jab to Benoit's midsection. Liddel is looking to clinch. Benoit circles away from the clinch attempt.
Liddel misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Benoit.
Liddel takes the fight into the clinch. Liddel lands a body punch in the clinch. Benoit has Liddel pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Liddel manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing. Liddel wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee. Liddel wants to break free but Benoit has control.
Benoit wants a takedown.
Chunk Liddel has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chris Benoit. Liddel's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Benoit looks to clinch and Liddel counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Liddel tries to clinch but fails miserably and Benoit counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
That's one minute gone in the round. Liddel looking for a guillotine here but Benoit defends easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Benoit slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. Benoit moves into full mount! Liddel is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.
Benoit controlling from mount. Liddel wants to control but Benoit is having none of it. Liddel keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Benoit can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Liddel is looking to escape. Benoit sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Benoit looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead. Benoit with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Liddel on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Liddel tries to get out of the position. Liddel tries to get back to half guard but can't. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Liddel is trying to reverse the position but instead Benoit has taken his back - oops! Liddel is breathing heavily.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Benoit scores with some strikes to the side of the head there. Good, points scoring shots.
Benoit is working the ground and pound here and the referee is taking a close look at Liddel. He must escape soon or this one will be stopped. Benoit has the hooks in and he's looking for a rear naked choke here. Liddel is defending well but eventually Benoit manages to get an arm under the chin and he's locked on the RNC! Liddel has no choice but to tap now! He does! This one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:31 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Chris Benoit! Chris Benoit is the new heavyweight champion!
