The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
freak throws the kick towards the body but cruz avoids it.
freak tries to bum rush cruz with a series of wild strikes but cruz uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
cruz swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
freak circles away from the clinch attempt.
cruz looks for a takedown but freak sprawls well.
freak misses with a head kick.
freak throws a right and a left that cruz avoids nicely.
cruz fails with an attempt to clinch.
A slow jab from freak misses its intended target.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
cruz scores with a nice right hand.
cruz tries to close the distance and clinch but freak swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
cruz misses with a series of wild punches.
freak misses with a double jab.

cruz is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
cruz sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.

cruz wants to sweep but no luck.
freak stands up over cruz, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
cruz throws a right and a left that both miss.

freak closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - freak lands in his opponent's guard.

cruz is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
cruz manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. freak manages to get himself to full guard.

cruz stands and throws freak's legs to the side, diving into side control.

cruz is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. freak knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

freak manages to work his way to half guard, despite cruz's best efforts.
freak keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
cruz is trying to control. freak wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

cruz tries to pass the half guard into mount. freak knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
freak has his hands clasped together around cruz's back. He's all about the action.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
cruz lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
cruz looks to score some points with some ground and pound.

cruz is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and freak defends it well.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
cruz swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

jiujitsu freak dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

cruz scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
jiujitsu freak is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
cruz lands the left hand.

cruz changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. freak looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
freak takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
freak might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
freak takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
cruz working away.
freak tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but cruz wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
freak takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
cruz trying to control the position but freak is working away.

cruz in side control, working for a kimura. He's got hold of an arm and he's torquing it... freak is tapping! That's the end of the fight!
