7 - 5 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Boris Brushnikov! The judges for this bout are Dmitry Maklakov, Fedor Mirinova and Ivan Kurochkin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Brushnikov shoots for a double leg takedown but Loktekrutko sprawls well. He's pushed Brushnikov's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Loktekrutko fails with the takedown and Brushnikov holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch. Brushnikov has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Loktekrutko avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch. A short right from Loktekrutko. Brushnikov is struggling to control the position. Loktekrutko pulls guard successfully.
Brushnikov trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Loktekrutko keeping moving, preventing Brushnikov from controlling successfully. Loktekrutko wants to finish this one by submission but Brushnikov is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Loktekrutko. Brushnikov gets back to half guard. The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nikolaev chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Cope can pounce on him.
Nikolaev throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Cope. Nikolaev throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Cope throws a head kick but Nikolaev moves out of range.
Cope misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Nikolaev lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
Nikolaev throws a combination that misses and Cope counters with a single leg into guard. Nikolaev didn't expect that. Cope trying to control the position from guard on top but Nikolaev is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Cope working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Cope pushes down on Nikolaev's leg and manages to get into half guard. Cope has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Cope is looking to take a break and control but Nikolaev is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Cope has control of Nikolaev's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Nikolaev regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Cope fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Cope jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Nikolaev is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Nikolaev and Cope has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Cope throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage. Cope advances to full mount. Cope thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage. Cope jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Nikolaev manages to avoid the submission attempt. Cope is putting a hurting on Nikolaev here, landing some big shots from side control.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Cope tries for a kimura but Nikolaev is defending well. Cope has an Americana. Nikolaev didn't react quickly enough there and he's in big trouble now! He tries to squirm out but is forced to tap! Cope is delighted and gyrates infront of the ring girls. They seem to like the attention - it'll be interesting to see if Cope hooks up with any of them at the after show party.

It looks like Nogi Kartov has been cut. Jones takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away. Good leg kick by Jones there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.

Jones swings away with a leg kick that misses. Kartov takes a swing at Jones's ribcage but misses. Kartov uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Jones. Kartov keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

Jones is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Kartov. Kartov shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Jones closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so. Jones throws and low kick but Kartov moves out of range easily. Phantom Jones has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nogi Kartov. Kartov tries for a takedown but Jones circles away easily and Jones counters with an outside leg kick.

Kartov tries to score a power double leg takedown but Jones sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Kartov somewhat. Kartov misses with a jab, cross combination.

Kartov throws a lazy head kick and Jones counters with a head kick. That will keep Kartov thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks! Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. A head kick misses from Jones. Kartov shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away. Kartov thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

That's one minute gone in the round. Jones throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land. Kartov shoots and misses and Jones counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Jones throws a head kick but Kartov moves out of range.
Kartov checks a leg kick nicely. Kartov scores with a sloppy right hand. Jones should have avoided that one. Phantom Jones is winning the standup battle so far. A head kick misses from Jones. Jones tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target. Nice takedown defense from Jones. No joy for Kartov on that attempt. Kartov closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Kartov lands in his opponent's guard. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Jones holds on and takes a little breather.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Kartov accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Kartov pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Jones is keeping the position for now. Kartov drops back looking for a leg! Jones is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Jones manages to kick Kartov off! Kartov jumps back into Jones's guard. Kartov drops back looking for a leg! Jones is in trouble here! That's three minutes gone in the round. Kartov thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Jones can't keep his opponent in guard - Kartov advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Nogi Kartov has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Anatoli lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin. A combination from Anatoli does no damage. Anatoli throws a shot to the body.
Anatoli lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Karpin circles away quickly and effectively. Anatoli misses with a two punch combination.

That was a close second round but I would say that Billy Johnson will probably get the nod. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Johnson escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Billy Johnson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Andy Kaufman. Kaufman looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Johnson is fending him off so far but Kaufman persists. Nope, Johnson circles away and we're back to standing. Kaufman will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.

Billy Johnson is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Kaufman is trying to improve his position. A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Johnson's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
