2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ken Bates! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 7 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Mark Pain! The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Pain is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Bates's half guard. The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace. Bates is defending against the submission attempts here by Pain.
Pain seems to be working for a kimura but Bates defends the submission attempt. Pain thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Pain slips a nice elbow through Bates's hands, connecting with Bates's forehead. Bates is defending against the submission attempts here by Pain.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Pain is looking to pass Bates's guard but actually Bates recovers to full guard. Pain tries to free his leg and advance position but Bates is retaining full guard.

Bates looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Bates! Bates swings around for an armbar but Pain sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Bates's guard. Pain looking to sit in guard and control but Bates gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Bates won't allow Pain to get back to his feet. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Bates loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Bates prevents Pain from getting back to his feet. Pain really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Bates. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Bates wants to stand but Pain has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Pain wants to stand and escape but Bates is having none of it. Bates trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Bates wants to control from the top but Pain keeps moving. Bates is breathing heavily. Pain pushes Bates off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there. Pain closes the distance and clinches up with Bates, looking for a takedown. Pain pushes Bates against the cage but Bates circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet. Pain is looking to take a break and control but Bates is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Pain is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Bates is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. You can see the frustration on Bates's face as Pain controls the position. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Bates gets back to half guard. Pain looks to score some points with some ground and pound. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

He's got his arms around Bates's waist but Bates gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Pain off to one side. Pain fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Bates sprawls well initially but Pain persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Pain stops Bates from getting back to his feet.
Pain looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Bates with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Pain lands strikes from half guard. Mark Pain has got the better of the ground game so far. Bates tries to kick Pain off but Pain keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. Pain is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Bates is just riding it out for now. Pain eventually gives up the hold. Pain winds up and cracks Bates with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Bates is refusing to be controlled, as Pain sits in half guard. Pain tries to pass to full mount but Bates defends it.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Mark Pain hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Bates stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Bates wants it to stay on the feet. Pain shoots in looking for a takedown. Bates tries to sprawl out of it but Pain keeps driving through. The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Maynard tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Morgan swivels and escapes. Gray Maynard seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. The fight moves into the clinch position. Maynard misses with a short punch on the inside. Morgan is trying to break free. Morgan is looking to break free of the clinch but Maynard has double underhooks. Morgan gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Maynard regains guard.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! House gets in close and instigates a clinch. House fails to pull the fight into his guard.
