Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Martim Relvas! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mike Matusow! The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Skip Squint and Steve Erwin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Matusow tries to bum rush Relvas with a series of wild strikes but Relvas uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Relvas has his takedown stuffed and Matusow counters with a nice double leg into half guard. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Matusow controlling the pace. Relvas trying to control here.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Matusow in particular looking to stall. Matusow looks to land a strike but Relvas avoids it nicely and regains full guard. Matusow must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Matusow stopping the sweep attempt from Relvas. Matusow is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
That's one minute gone in the round. Matusow passes easily into side control. Nice work. Relvas is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Relvas wants to control but Matusow is keeping busy.
Matusow is taking a breather. Relvas says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Matusow really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Relvas. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Relvas is trying to get back to full guard. OK we're going to have a standup here. Mike Matusow hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Relvas avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Horrible takedown by Relvas or perhaps it was just good defense by Matusow which made him look bad. Relvas has his takedown stuffed and Matusow counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Relvas's guard now. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Martim Relvas. That's going to take a lot out of him. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Matusow advances position into side control! Matusow controls the position. Matusow working away. Matusow controlling the position. Matusow is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Relvas is trying to escape and Matusow transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Relvas is forced to tap! Nice work there by Matusow! Very nice indeed!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ward tries for a takedown but Abate circles away easily and Abate counters with a takedown into side control. We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace. Abate landing strikes. Ward is looking for a sweep. Ward is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Abate stands up and we're back to a striking position. We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Ward has eaten all the pies! Abate shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Ward taking some punishment here, with Abate in his half guard. Ward wants to improve his position but Abate is controlling well.
Ward is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Abate scores with a couple of nice shots. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Ward moves into full guard.

Abate won't allow Ward to sweep him here. Abate gets to his feet. Ward looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! Abate shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Abate is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Ward shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Ward has gone for a leg lock! Abate slips out almost immediately though and dives into Ward's guard. Abate with a nice head shot there.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Abate preventing the sweep. Abate trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Ward working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Abate doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Abate manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Ward looks winded! Abate landing some decent shots from guard. Ward bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Abate's guard. Ward has gone for a leg lock! Abate slips out almost immediately though and dives into Ward's guard. Abate wants to stand but Ward is controlling his posture from full guard. Abate knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Ward on the ground. Ward manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

That's three minutes gone in the round. Abate works over Ward with some ground and pound from guard. Ward is looking to sinch up a triangle. Abate throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Ward's body to avoid the submission. Ward has instead reached around Abate's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Ward arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.
