The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Valadez decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Mendosa wants to improve his position but Valadez is controlling well.
Mendosa is staying active underneath Valadez, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Mendosa tries to get to full guard but Valadez has control of the leg.

Valadez wants to control from the top but Mendosa keeps moving.

Mendosa had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Valadez defends it easily.
Valadez must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Yakiyama working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.

Yakiyama is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Aguilar's coaches at Miletich Xtreme Fighting Systems have been working on his defensive grappling in preparation for this fight so let's see if he can get out of this tricky position.

These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.
