The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Castro throws a leg kick and Evans decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Castro's guard. Evans is working Castro over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes. Evans throwing strikes but missing. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Castro is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Evans dives into side control.
Castro knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Evans on the ground. Evans is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Castro will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already. Evans is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Castro is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Castro has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage. Castro is squirming around, avoiding Evans's attempts to control the action. Evans is in the full mount, landing strikes. Evans working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet. Castro is bucking up trying to escape but Evans cracks him with another couple of good strikes. Evans thows a body shot but no joy. Castro seems to have got his legs back now. Evans thows a body kick. Castro tries to catch it but that hurt him. Evans scores with a push kick. Evans throws a head kick that half lands.
Evans gets a takedown into half guard. Evans wants to lay and pray for a moment but Castro keeps working. Evans is working for a submission of some sort.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Evans is taking a breather. Castro says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Evans. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

Thompson scores with a jab to the jaw. Meguru Takayanagi seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Takayanagi doesn't succeed with the takedown and Thompson counters with a straight punch to the midsection. Thompson clinches with his opponent.
Takayanagi pulls guard effortlessly. We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace. Takayanagi has his foot on Thompson's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Thompson works his way back into a safe position though. Takayanagi is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Takayanagi tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Thompson wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Thompson scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Takayanagi to see if he's OK. Thompson wants to lay and pray for a moment but Takayanagi keeps working.
