Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Johnie Rex! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, David Zound! The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Chris Saunders and Roger Salmon.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Zound throws a lazy uppercut
and Rex counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Rex could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Zound fails to land the takedown. Rex clinches up with Zound and pushes him back against the cage. Rex scores with a shoulder strike. Rex works on Zound's body with a couple of short punches. Rex doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Zound blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Zound is trying to break free. Rex lands a right hand. A head punch blocked on the inside by Zound. A nice left hand lands by Rex.
Rex misses with a hook from the clinch. A hook to the body from Rex.
Zound tries to pull guard but Rex forces him back to his feet, against the cage. Rex misses with some punches.
Rex tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage. A right hook to the body lands for Rex.
Rex swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Rex lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Zound backwards.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rex misses with some punches.
A short body shot lands from Rex as the two fighters clinch.
A shot in the inside from Rex. Rex tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked. Zound wants to get back to striking at distance but Rex won't allow it.
Rex digs a right hand into Zound's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Zound's gas tank. Zound blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Rex prevents a body shot from Zound. Rex lands on the inside with an uppercut. Zound successfully pulls guard.
Zound pulls Rex in close to prevent any damage. Zound looking to control.
Zound has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Zound is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Rex has his hands clasped together but Zound extends and breaks Rex's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Zound.
