The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Tolonen defending well as Maeda loads up on a big left hand. Tolonen jabs at Maeda's body. Maeda keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Good work by Maeda as he checks the leg kick. Tolonen misses with an uppercut. Maeda moves out of range as Tolonen strikes. Tolonen lands with a right hand. Reino Tolonen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Maeda is defended easily by Tolonen. Tolonen slips a jab from Maeda. A big right from Tolonen misses. Nice shot lands for Tolonen. Tolonen misses with a series of wild punches.
Horrible takedown attempt by Maeda or perhaps it was just good defense by Tolonen, which made it look bad. Tolonen ducks down and throws a hook to the body. Tolonen throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

That's going to take a lot out of Mitsuyo Maeda. Tolonen fails with an attempt to clinch.
Maeda changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Tolonen tries to avoid it but Maeda manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Tolonen to the ground. Tolonen escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Maeda gets a takedown into half guard. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Jakovlev dives in and grabs Engineer's left leg, looking for a takedown. Engineer pushes down on Jakovlev's head and hops out. Engineer leaves Jakovlev with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Drake on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those. Steel lands with a good body shot. Steel closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Steel scores with a shoulder strike. Steel can't find room to land a body shot as Drake controls the action.
Drake lands a hook that snaps the head of Steel backwards. A right handed body shot lands from Drake.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Steel is pressed up against the cage. Drake has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Steel down to the mat. Steel avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance. Drake fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Steel. Drake ducks down and throws a hook to the body. Drake misses with a straight left. Steel throws a body shot but no joy. Steel moves out of range of the strikes. Steel tries to close the distance and clinch up but Drake swats him away and circles back towards the center. Drake is trying hard to land a takedown here. Steel sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Steel has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Steel throws an overhand right that lands on Drake's shoulder, as Drake tries to avoid the shot. Steel pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Drake feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Steel is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Drake presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat. Drake tries to throw a body punch but Steel avoids it by throwing Drake back against the cage. Drake stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.

Hyypia ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Kalashnikov moves away. Kalashnikov throws a solid leg kick but Hyypia takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Kalashnikov. Kalashnikov throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean. It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Kalashnikov here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man. The fighters circling - Kalashnikov throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Kalashnikov uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Hyypia has time to react. A looping hook to the body misses from Kalashnikov. Hyypia does a little dance to reset his feet. Hyypia keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Kalashnikov. Vyacheslav Kalashnikov is winning the standup battle so far. Kalashnikov throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Kalashnikov throws a body kick that misses. Hyypia scores with a push kick. Kalashnikov throws a looping overhand right but Hyypia ducks down to avoid it.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hyypia keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Kalashnikov. A swing and a miss from Kalashnikov. Hyypia misses with an attempted mid kick.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Kalashnikov throws a series of punches but Hyypia avoids them all with ease. Kalashnikov buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Hyypia looks for the body kick but Kalashnikov saw that one coming. Hyypia walks into a stiff left hand from Kalashnikov. Kalashnikov scores with a kick to the body.
Hyypia is breathing heavily. Hyypia tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him. Kalashnikov throws a jab when Hyypia was well out of range. Hyypia fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Kalashnikov manages to avoid it. Hyypia sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs. Kalashnikov keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Hyypia takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
