Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Joe Thornton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Semore Butkiss (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). He arrived on a last minute flight shortly after looking tired and unhappy. Officials decided the fight should still take place, much to the delight of the fans in attendance. Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Joe Thornton and Semore Butkiss. The crowd seem to be enjoying Butkiss's choice of entrance music: Mama said. Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Joe Thornton! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Semore Butkiss! The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Sosuke Kotani and Shigeki Fujiwara.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Butkiss forces Thornton back against the cage and clinches. Thornton wants to get back to striking at distance but Butkiss won't allow it.
Thornton tries to pull guard but Butkiss won't allow it.
Butkiss breaks the clinch.
Thornton shoots for a double leg takedown but Butkiss sprawls well. He's pushed Thornton's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Thornton shoots and misses and Butkiss counters with a low kick, right behind Thornton 's knee. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Joe Thornton. That's going to take a lot out of him. Butkiss swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Thornton shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Butkiss pinned against the cage. Butkiss gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Butkiss closes the distance and lands a one-two.
It looks like Joe Thornton has been cut. Thornton dives in for a single leg takedown but Butkiss sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Thornton closes this distance looking for a takedown but Butkiss circles away. Butkiss has worked on his takedown defense in the runup to this fight and it is paying off so far. Thornton walks into a stiff left hand from Butkiss. Butkiss decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Butkiss in particular looking to stall. Butkiss moves into side control, avoiding a weak kimura attempt from Thornton. Thornton manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Butkiss content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. Butkiss wants to free his trapped foot but Thornton is holding on for dear life with his legs. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Thornton wants to get back to full guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Thornton looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Butkiss postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Thornton to stand up. Thornton with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Butkiss to score with a decent uppercut. Joe Thornton seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Thornton shoots in for a double leg but Butkiss sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Butkiss lands with a nice body punch. Butkiss scores with a decent looking hook. Butkiss pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Thornton tries to counter with a takedown but Butkiss is quick to defend against it. Thornton closes the distance and clinches up with Butkiss, looking for a takedown. Thornton pushes Butkiss against the cage but Butkiss circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Butkiss forces Thornton back against the cage and clinches.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Butkiss stops a takedown attempt from Thornton.

Thornton fails with the takedown and Butkiss counters with a right hand to the body. Butkiss lands a left and a right that send Thornton crashing to the mat, dazed. Butkiss thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!
Thornton is rocked! Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Butkiss lands a slapping body shot.
Thornton takes a body punch but keeps moving. Thornton is breathing heavily. Butkiss lands with a nice body punch. Butkiss scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Thornton doesn't seem bothered though. Thornton takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Thornton backs away from a small jab... but Butkiss lunges forward with a huge superman punch! Thornton crumples to the ground as his mouth piece is sent flying! Butkiss with a spectacular finish!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Superman Punch). Semore Butkiss! Semore Butkiss decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Miyagi has his takedown stuffed and Tanaka counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Tanaka. Miyagi's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button! Miyagi changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Tanaka fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Miyagi gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Tanaka stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Miyagi swivels though and keeps the full guard. Miyagi working for a triangle but Tanaka defends it easily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Tanaka pushes down on Miyagi's leg and manages to get into half guard. Tanaka passes to full mount! Tanaka seems to be looking to move to his opponent's back but Miyagi is holding on tight.
Tanaka looking to secure an arm triangle but Miyagi defends it well. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Tanaka takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Tanaka is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Miyagi can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Miyagi prevents Tanaka from taking his back. Tanaka controlling from the full mount. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Tanaka takes Miyagi's back. Could be looking for a rear naked choke here - either way, Miyagi is in trouble. Tanaka is looking for the choke from the back position but Miyagi is controlling his hands well.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Tanaka controls the action. Tanaka's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige. Tanaka wants to control but Miyagi is keeping busy. Oooh a big shot gets through from Tanaka. Many more shots like that and the referee will have to think about stepping in!

The fight stays on the outside here - Deegan looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Gold tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Deegan defends well and Gold ends up having to push Deegan into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Deegan tries to clinch up. Deegan swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Deegan wants to clinch. Deegan seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym. Deegan tries to clinch up. Ouch! a nice leg kick from Deegan, right into the meat.

Gold has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Gold throwing strikes but Deegan recovers to half guard. A much better position. Gold thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Gold sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Deegan defending well though. Deegan manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Gold keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage. Gold drops down looking for an ankle pick but Deegan pulls his leg out and moves away.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Gold advances to half guard.
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Cory Deegan. I think Gold has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Cortega uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Joe. Cortega on the wrong end of a nice hook. Joe sizes up Cortega with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle. Martez Cortega has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Cortega tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Cortega pushes Joe up against the cage in a clinch. An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Joe. Cortega wants to take the fight to the mat but Joe manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch. Still in the clinch, Joe scores with a nice short uppercut. Joe lands a left hand that snaps the head of Cortega backwards. Cortega escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A looping hook to the body misses from Vondrachek. Newmark does a little dance to reset his feet. Newmark throws the left hand but Vondrachek avoids the punch easily. Vondrachek attempts a counter takedown but Newmark avoids it well and moves away. Vondrachek scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one. Newmark takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh. Vondrachek tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him. Newmark lands a right hook to the body.

Vondrachek wants to slow Newmark down by chopping away at his legs. Newmark lands a nice leg kick that just misses Vondrachek's sensitive parts. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Newmark goes for a spinning back kick but it misses. Vondrachek scores with a hook to the body. Newmark takes a step back and tries to catch his breath. Vondrachek has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Vondrachek misses with the combination.

The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end. A punch lands to the side of Newmark 's head but he takes it in his stride. Newmark lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent. Vondrachek tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Vondrachek throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Newmark tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Vondrachek is in Newmark's guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Petr Vondrachek will probably get the nod. The cut man is working on Petr Vondrachek's cut. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
