The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Grimwald stuns Whitaker Jr with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range. Whitaker Jr looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. Pernell Whitaker Jr seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Grimwald pulls out of a head kick attempt.

This has been an exciting period of action! Gaarlandt shoots in but no luck this time. Matus scores with a jab to the jaw.

Gaarlandt stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Matus swivels though and keeps the full guard. Gaarlandt drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Matus manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Gaarlandt has Matus in his guard.

Matus doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Matus manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Gaarlandt is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Matus defends well. Gaarlandt has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Matus can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Matus controlling from the top position. Gaarlandt seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gale swings away with a body shot that misses
and Vigilante counters with a thumping low kick. Vigilante lands a head kick. Gale smiles back at him and beckons him forward. Gale fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Vigilante manages to avoid it. Gale moves into the clinch. Vigilante blocks a couple of punches on the inside.

I was talking to Vigilante's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight. Vigilante lands a shoulder strike. Vigilante lands a knee to the head.
Vigilante creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Gale's defenses. Vigilante's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Vigilante moves into range and connects with a jab. A head kick misses from Vigilante. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Vigilante tries to bum rush Gale with a series of wild strikes but Gale uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Vigilante keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

Njewel throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Pietrzak has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Pietrzak misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Njewel tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Pietrzak was well out of range. Poor timing from Njewel. It seemed like Pietrzak was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it. Pietrzak lands with a nice body punch. Pietrzak misses with an attempted mid kick.
Njewel will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.

Njewel has Pietrzak pulled in close to control his posture. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Njewel working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Pietrzak. Pietrzak has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Pietrzak postures up and lands a big shot to Njewel's brow. Njewel has control of Pietrzak's left arm, preventing Pietrzak from doing any damage. Njewel trying to control the position.

That was a close second round but I would say that Martin Philippe Njewel will probably get the nod. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Pietrzak trying to control but Njewel is working from the bottom. Njewel pulls Pietrzak in close to prevent any damage. Pietrzak wants to control from the top but Njewel keeps moving.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Njewel seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now. Njewel working a defensive guard here.
Pietrzak is fighting to break Njewel's control of his arms but Njewel is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet. Njewel gets caught napping as Pietrzak dives in and scores a takedown. Njewel manages to retain guard. In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Pietrzak working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though. Pietrzak throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Njewel works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Njewel is trying to control the position from the bottom.
And that's the end of the fight! I would just about give that final round to Bartek Pietrzak. I think Pietrzak has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Renato keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Malkin misses with a straight left. Renato drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles. Renato takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.

Renato fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Malkin. Malkin's legs have taken a beating and he's really slowing down as a result. Renato lands a nice leg kick that just misses Malkin's sensitive parts. Renato connects with a crisp jab. Renato bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Malkin shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Renato pinned against the cage. Renato gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Renato now looks to counter with a shot at the body. Renato looks to land a body kick but Malkin moved away.
That's one minute gone in the round. Renato digs a good body shot into Malkin's ribs. Renato paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button. Renato misses with an uppercut. A solid leg kick lands there for Malkin.
Malkin staying out of range there. Renato throws a hook to the side of Malkin's head but Malkin sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully. Malkin listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut. Renato scores with a push kick. Both of our modern day gladiators look out of it here - a gruelling 5 rounds of action taking it's toll on them, no doubt. Renato throws a low kick but it's checked well by Malkin. Malkin appears to be looking for a counter takedown. Malkin connects with a looping right hand.

A little jabbing left from Renato on the counter but it doesn't find it's target. Malkin needs to keep his hands up - Renato had a free shot at his head there. Malkin shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Renato as he jumps to the side. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Evgeniy Malkin. That's going to take a lot out of him. Malkin tries a head kick but it misses.
It seemed like Renato was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it. Tiago Renato has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Evgeniy Malkin is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Renato swings for the body but Malkin moves out of range.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Renato throws a shot from downtown. Malkin moves away and avoids it. Malkin swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Renato. Renato jabs. That one connects to the head of his opponent.

and Malkin decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Renato's guard. Malkin advances to half guard. Malkin seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Renato is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Malkin's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Malkin's back!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Renato trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Malkin doesn't escape. Renato avoiding Malkin 's attempts to control his hands. Malkin covering up well under a barage of strikes. Renato lands with a hammerfist to the side of Malkin's head. That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Renato misses with punches from the back. Malkin looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment. Malkin rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
Malkin has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Renato is working away from the top position though.

The fight is ruled a draw! Evgeniy Malkin retains his title. It's always disappointing when a championship fight ends as a draw but that's what happens when you leave the fight in the judges hands!
