Villamora throws a jab when Usyk was well out of range. Usyk tries to clinch up but Villamora circles away and keeps his distance. Villamora's coach down at Hell's Balls NY Hellcademy was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Villamora's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight. Villamora cracks Usyk with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business. Usyk drops Villamora with a right and a left! Usyk comes rushing in but Villamora regains his composure and manages to keep Usyk in guard.
It looks like Carrera Villamora has been cut. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Usyk wants to stand but Villamora has a closed guard, so he can't escape. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Lu has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Velvet throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena. Velvet displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Whiteside. Velvet missing with a left hand there. Whiteside was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Whiteside on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those. Velvet fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Whiteside on the side of the head. Velvet lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head. Velvet catches Whiteside with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong! We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Velvet tries to land a front kick but Whiteside steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed. Whiteside chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Velvet can pounce on him.

We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Nirvi has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Khaan misses with a low kick as Still jumps back. Khaan fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Still. Still dives in and grabs Khaan's left leg, looking for a takedown. Khaan pushes down on Still's head and hops out. Still throws a jab but it's blocked by Khaan. Dre Still seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Still takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
A looping hook to the body misses from Khaan. Still does a little dance to reset his feet. And Still tries to counter it with a takedown but Khaan pushes his down on his head and steps out. We've been told by Khaan's head coaches at Sun Tzu's Art of War that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight. Khaan misses with a wild body shot. Still avoids the head kick by Khaan.
Khaan wants to land a leg kick but Still is out of range. Khaan lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Still on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those. Still comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range. Khaan tries to score with a low kick but Still moves his leg out of the way.
