Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Renz Ren! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jose Rizal! The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Robert Douchet and Steve Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ren throws a solid leg kick but Rizal takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Ren. Ren tries to land a front kick but Rizal steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed. Rizal moves into range and clinches up with Ren. Rizal has Ren pressed against the cage, preventing Ren from circling away and getting back to striking at range. The referee is keeping an eye on Ren - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Ren avoiding damage.
Rizal turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control! Ren tries to improve position but can't. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Rizal decides to stand back up. Rizal fails with the takedown. Rizal displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Ren.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ren stuns Rizal with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range. Rizal shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Rizal showed some decent athleticism there. Rizal is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Ren is just riding it out for now. Rizal eventually gives up the hold. Ren wants to get back to full guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ren wants to get back to full guard but Rizal has mounted him! Rizal goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Ren turns into him and now he's in Rizal's guard.
Ren trying to control but Rizal is working from the bottom. Rizal pulls Ren in close to his closed guard and prevents Ren from doing any damage or advancing position. Rizal looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ren is fighting to break Rizal's control of his arms but Rizal is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Ren works a leg free and moves into half guard. Ren is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Rizal controlling the position well. Rizal wants to improve his position but Ren is controlling well.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Rizal keeping hold of Ren's head, controlling as best he can. Rizal avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Ren. Ren is keen to just control but Rizal is a slippery customer. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Rizal is looking to improve his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Jose Rizal will probably get the nod. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Ren closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Ren lands in his opponent's guard. Rizal wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Ren manages to pass to side control.
Ren escapes and gets back to his feet. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Rizal tries to clinch but Ren moves out of range. Ren fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Ren shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Rizal is trying to defend but Ren finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Rizal is looking for a sweep. Ren is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rizal tries to kick Ren off but Ren keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. Rizal is doing well to control the position and prevent Ren from advancing to side control. Ren landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent. Ren is looking to take a break and control but Rizal is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Renz Ren overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Rizal is concentrating on defense, preventing Ren from advancing position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Ren is looking for a kimura but Rizal is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Ren to get the leverage. Rizal controlling the position for now. Ren tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Rizal.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Ren tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Rizal paws at him with a jab and circles away. Rizal instigates a clinch. Ren is trying to break free. Ren is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Rizal gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt. Rizal prevents the takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Renz Ren. That's going to take a lot out of him. Ren pulls Rizal into guard.
Rizal is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Rizal trying to stand up but can't free himself from Ren's guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Rizal controlling from the top position. Rizal trying to move into half guard but instead Ren has managed to sweep! Rizal keeping moving, preventing Ren from controlling successfully. Rizal has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Rizal bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Ren's guard. Ren is trying to keep Rizal in close.
Ren looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Rizal postures up.
Rizal sitting in guard, not really doing much. Rizal is continuing to stall. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close second round but I would say that Renz Ren will probably get the nod. That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!
Ren slips under a jab. Ren avoids the body shot from Rizal.
The fight stays on the outside here - Rizal looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Rizal moves into the clinch. Rizal leaning against his opponent.
Ren has Rizal pressed against the cage, preventing Rizal from circling away and getting back to striking at range. Ren decides to pull guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Rizal accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Rizal pushes down on Ren's leg and manages to get into half guard. Rizal blocks the strikes from Ren.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rizal seems to be looking for submissions.
Ren looks like he's trying to stand up.
Ren wants to control but Rizal is keeping busy and won't allow it. Well, if Rizal is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Ren wants to get back to his feet.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Ren tries to close the distance and clinch up but Rizal swats him away and circles back towards the center. Some wild striking there from Rizal.
Ren fails with a takedown attempt.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Rizal throws a half hearted mid kick. Ren throws a big counter combination but Rizal scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage. A punch combination from Rizal misses. Ren seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance. Ren blocks the body kick.
As Rizal looks to move away, Ren throws a big counter combo but Rizal just gets out of the way. Ren slips a jab and a cross from Rizal.
Ren drops down looking for a counter takedown but Rizal sprawls and moves away. Rizal has closed the distance and engaged Ren in a clinch.
Ren stalls. Ren drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Ren tries to pull guard but Rizal holds him up against the cage and eventually Ren drops back down to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Renz Ren. That's going to take a lot out of him.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Rizal slows down the pace here.
Ren has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Rizal clear over his head and slammed him to the mat! Ren looking for the choke but no joy. Rizal is defending well here and trying to improve his position.
And that's the end of the fight! Jose Rizal comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. I think Rizal has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
