Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Rodolfo Castaneda!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Ben Hemmingworth and Eliza Hachem.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Bates moves into the clinch.
Bates tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Bates misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Castaneda has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Bates after a bit of a struggle.
Castaneda changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Bates fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Bates gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Bates throws a knee to the head but misses.
Bates unloads a knee to the mid-section.
Castaneda prevents a body shot from Bates.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bates misses with some punches.
Bates is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Castaneda is defending well for now.

Bates wants the takedown. Castaneda is fighting it off but Bates persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Castaneda's guard against the cage.

Bates stands up over his opponent, looking to dive in with a big punch. Here he comes, superman style! Oh, the punch misses and Castaneda has got him in a triangle choke for good measure! Oh no! Bates manages to get his head free but now Castaneda has transitioned to an armbar! Bates grimaces and is forced to tap! Beautiful Jiu Jitsu from Castaneda! I'd be surprised if that didn't end up as submission of the night!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kairuz showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Smith.
Smith looks to land a left hand but Kairuz moved out of range nicely.
A right-left combo lands from Smith.
Smith looks to throw the jab but Kairuz is out of range.
Kairuz avoids a punch combination nicely.
Kairuz throws a head kick that misses.
Smith lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
Kairuz uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Smith.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Smith throws a solid leg kick but Kairuz takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Smith.
Kairuz attempts a counter takedown but Smith avoids it well and moves away.
Smith misses with a jab, cross combination.
A quick step to the side and Kairuz tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.
George Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Kairuz ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

and Smith connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Kairuz shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Smith defends it nicely.
Smith has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Kairuz is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Smith closes the distance and lands a one-two.

Kairuz throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Smith tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Kairuz is in Smith's guard.
Kairuz has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.
Kairuz slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Smith is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Kairuz seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Smith for as long as he can get away with.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Smith is looking to regain half guard here but Kairuz keeps moving and retains side control.

The referee asks Kairuz politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Kairuz prefers to stall for the moment though.

Kairuz remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Kairuz's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Kairuz has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Kairuz could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Smith can't do much from the bottom here.

Kairuz shoots in for a double leg but Smith sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
George Smith seems to be getting the better of the standup.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Kairuz checks a leg kick.
Smith looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Kairuz is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Smith.

Smith pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Smith lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Kairuz circles away quickly and effectively.
Smith tries to land a front kick but Kairuz steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Smith lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
Smith misses with a double jab.
Smith is breathing heavily.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Kairuz.

Smith tries to sprawl but Kairuz drives through with a takedown into half guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Kairuz is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Smith sees it coming and defends easily.
Kairuz looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Smith with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Kairuz is in close to Smith's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Kairuz is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Kairuz passes Smith's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Kairuz perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Kairuz working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Smith is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Kairuz scores with a couple of nice shots.

Smith swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Kairuz changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
George Smith has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Michael Kairuz is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Kairuz walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.

And that's the end of the fight!
Michael Kairuz showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Kairuz, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Filorio shoots in but Irwin avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Filorio lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Irwin backs up against the cage.

It looks like Steve Irwin has been cut.

Filorio fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Irwin, pushing him back against the cage.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Irwin has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Filorio lands a left hand that snaps the head of Irwin backwards.
Filorio stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body.
Irwin has Filorio pressed against the cage, preventing Filorio from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Filorio breaks from the clinch.
Filorio gets in close and tags Irwin with a short punch that almost sends Irwin to the mat! Oh Irwin is in big trouble! He turns his back on Filorio, trying to create some distance but Filorio rushes him, striking wildly and Irwin goes down! The referee tackles Filorio into the cage to end the fight! Filorio is one violent man!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:42 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Gravito Filorio!
Steve Irwin was interviewed post fight and said 'I want a rematch '.
