The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Putin changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Makunouchi looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Score +4 for clean takedown past guard: Putin (4) vs (0) Makunouchi We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Makunouchi can do anything to dispel that myth. Putin thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Putin swings around for an armbar but Makunouchi sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Putin's guard. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Putin (4) vs (2) Makunouchi Putin is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Makunouchi defends well. Makunouchi really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Putin. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Makunouchi controls from within his opponent's guard. Putin looking for subs off his back but Makunouchi has passed one foot through into half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Makunouchi is pressing down on Putin's thigh, looking to free his foot. Putin is holding on for now. Putin makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Putin.
