Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Anthony Birchack! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Demitrious Johnson! The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Trevor Gratis and Dillan Fox.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Johnson tries for a takedown but Birchack circles away easily and Birchack counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Johnson! A lull in the action here as Birchack stalls from top position. Johnson is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Johnson has hold of Birchack's hands but Birchack slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Johnson keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Birchack is trying to control the action in half guard but Johnson is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Birchack is just content to waste time from the top position. Johnson takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard. Johnson working a defensive guard here.
Birchack throws a strike but Johnson rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Birchack is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Birchack is pulling down on Johnson's head. It's preventing any offense from Johnson, at least for the moment. Johnson throws a big elbow that misses.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Johnson is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Birchack looking to sweep here. No luck so far. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Birchack avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Johnson throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Birchack is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Johnson shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Johnson showed some decent athleticism there. Birchack on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Birchack tries to get out of the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Johnson keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action. Johnson trying to control the action but Birchack is working from the bottom. Johnson should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Birchack is holding on to half guard well. Johnson trying to pass the guard but Birchack defending well.
That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Johnson seems to be working for a kimura but Birchack defends the submission attempt. Birchack has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Johnson is working away from the top position though. Birchack is trying to get back to full guard. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Johnson is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Demitrious Johnson will probably get the nod. That's time! Back to the action!
Birchack drives through and clinches with Johnson against the cage.
Johnson escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Birchack shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Johnson but Johnson pushes him off and we're back to square one. And an attempted straight right on the counter from Johnson! But no joy. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Johnson is defended easily by Birchack. Birchack changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Birchack dives in for a single leg takedown but Johnson sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Johnson fails with a takedown attempt.
That's one minute gone in the round. Birchack looks to land a right hand but Johnson moved out of range. Johnson swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made. Anthony Birchack is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Birchack shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down. Johnson avoids a punch combination nicely.
Birchack shoots in looking for a takedown. Johnson tries to sprawl out of it but Birchack keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Johnson manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Anthony Birchack. That's going to take a lot out of him. Birchack shoots in and gets a takedown into Johnson's guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Johnson is controlling Birchack's posture. Johnson keeping moving, preventing Birchack from controlling successfully. Johnson escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Birchack gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Johnson working a defensive guard here.
Birchack postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Johnson is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Birchack engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Birchack lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard. Johnson has his feet on Birchack's thighs here. He's pushed Birchack off and worked for a very quick armbar from the bottom! He's flipped onto his stomach and he's cranking hard on the arm! Birchack screams in pain and taps out! This one is all over!
