Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Paulo Kang! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Freddie Roach! The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Chris Downing and Tiny Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Roach looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Roach is trying to control the action in half guard but Kang is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Roach working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that. Roach is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. Roach trying to control the action but Kang is working from the bottom. Kang wants to control but Roach is keeping busy.
That's one minute gone in the round. Roach is just content to waste time from the top position. Kang takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard. Roach trying to control the position from guard on top but Kang is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Roach pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Kang is keeping the position for now. Kang is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Roach tries to bum rush Kang with a series of wild strikes but Kang uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Kang throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Kang digs a good body shot into Roach's ribs.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Roach goes for a high kick. It partially lands. Kang tries to keep at a distance but Roach has taken the fight into the clinch. Roach goes for a body shot but it's blocked.

Roach keeps control of Kang as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks. Roach has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Kang uses from the top position. Kang thows a big elbow that misses. Roach working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Kang. Kang with a flurry of punches that miss. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Kang dips to his left and cracks Roach with an uppercut! Kang lands a really nice looking cross but Roach seems unphased.

Roach looks gassed! Kang smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button. Roach looking for a takedown here - he's got it. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Kang holds on and takes a little breather. Roach looking to pass the guard. Kang pushes Roach off and gets back to his feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Kang connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Roach is looking to clinch. Kang scores with a jab. Roach is looking to clinch. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Roach. Paulo Kang has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Freddie Roach. Kang connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe. Kang throws out a powerful jab. Kang fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Roach on the side of the head. Paulo Kang is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Roach has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Roach there as he acknowledges the shot. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Kang connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe. Kang is really peppering his opponent's head with punches. Roach walks into a stiff left hand from Kang. Kang dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Kang fakes a jab and then connects with a hook. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Paulo Kang dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Roach is rocked! Freddie Roach is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Roach shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Kang lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Roach is still on wobbly legs! Can Kang finish him? Kang is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all. Roach misses with a takedown attempt - Kang sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Kang walks forward and throws a big overhand right! Roach drops to the floor like a sack of potatoes! Kang swarms on him with more punches until the referee wrestles him away from Roach's unconscious body! Wow, that was brutal!

Witherspoon sprawls well initially but DeNomee persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Witherspoon is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but DeNomee pulls his head out easily. DeNomee is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Witherspoon tries to roll over but DeNomee keeps him under control. Witherspoon is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Witherspoon is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but DeNomee pulls his head out easily. DeNomee is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Witherspoon has managed to free his arm - good work. Witherspoon regains full guard. Nicely done.

Is it all over??? No! Witherspoon has escaped and now he's on top! Witherspoon wants to control from the top but DeNomee keeps moving. DeNomee is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Witherspoon defends well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Witherspoon trying to control but DeNomee is working from the bottom. Witherspoon content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because DeNomee has locked up a guillotine! DeNomee's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Witherspoon is holding on here and DeNomee must be using up a lot of energy. Witherspoon has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! DeNomee gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!

That's better than Cruz was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Cruz lands a heavy elbow. Cruz in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.
ahr tries to improve his position but Cruz has taken his back! Cruz has a choke - it's sunk in pretty tight... Will ahr tap? No... maybe... yes! He's tapped! Cruz pushes ahr away and gets up to celebrate with his corner!

malu throws a right and a left that both miss. Howlett changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. malu really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Howlett dodges the punch combination from malu.

malu pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. A punch combination from malu misses. malu tries a head kick but it misses.
malu looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Howlett motions for malu to come forward. Howlett throws a leg kick but it misses it's target. Howlett dives in and grabs malu's left leg, looking for a takedown. malu pushes down on Howlett's head and hops out. Howlett fails with the takedown. malu displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Howlett. keka malu has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Howlett. malu scores with a one two! Howlett had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.

A head kick misses from malu. malu is breathing heavily. malu leaves Howlett with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Howlett is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Howlett blocks a head kick by malu.
Howlett closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. malu wants to get back to his feet.
Howlett lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Howlett lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Howlett looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks malu with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Howlett sitting and controlling from the half guard. Howlett decides to return to a standing position. keka malu is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. malu gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Howlett to score an easy takedown into full guard. Howlett prevents malu from getting back to his feet.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Howlett is stalling in the full guard. malu is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Howlett dives into side control.

That's four minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Howlett trying to control the position but malu is working away. A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet. malu is not content to let Howlett control the position. Howlett in side control, working for a kimura. He's got hold of an arm and he's torquing it... malu is tapping! That's the end of the fight!

Smackiau had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes. Wells shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Smackiau napping and manages to drive through into side control! Wells goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Smackiau rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Wells's guard! Nice work there by Smackiau! Wells preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Wells should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Wells is rocked! This has been an exciting period of action! Wells walks straight into a right hand from Smackiau - that's dropped him! Smackiau jumps into mount and starts pounding away - can he finish?! More strikes go undefended and the referee has to dive in to save Wells from any more punishment! Wells complains about the stoppage but falls over as he tries to stand back up, so it was clearly a good stoppage.
