Coming up we have a featherweight Tycoon World Grappling Championship rules bout between Augustine Tupper (ranked 4093 p4p, 184 weight class) and Pops Maellard (ranked 1375 p4p, 0 weight class). Pops Maellard told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the featherweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 10 wins and 2 losses; Augustine Tupper! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Tokyo, with a TWGC record of 3 wins and 0 losses; Pops Maellard! The judges for this bout are Radbod Blank, Patrick Alders and Albert Achterberg.
The official calls the fighters to the middle and the contest is under way. Maellard closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Tupper is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Maellard pulls him back up using the underhooks. Tupper turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Tupper manages to end up in side control. Score +4 for clean takedown past guard: Tupper (4) vs (0) Maellard Maellard is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Maellard is doing well to control the position and prevent Tupper from advancing to side control. Maellard moves into full guard.
Tupper tries to free his leg and advance position but Maellard is retaining full guard. Maellard seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Tupper trying to control but Maellard is working from the bottom. Tupper passes Maellard's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

We've been hearing good reports from Tupper's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Tupper pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Maellard is keeping the position for now. Tupper trying to control but Maellard is working from the bottom. Maellard seems keen to control Tupper's posture. Maellard keeping moving, preventing Tupper from controlling successfully. Tupper might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. That's two minutes gone in the round. Maellard trying to control the position from guard on top but Tupper is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Tupper wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Maellard is now in half guard. Tupper trying to control from the bottom.
Tupper regains full guard. Nicely done. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Tupper looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Maellard puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard. Maellard prevents Tupper from improving his position.

Maellard wants to control but Tupper is keeping him busy. Maellard perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. Maellard is looking for a kimura but Tupper is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Maellard to get the leverage. Maellard wants to control but Tupper is keeping him busy.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Maellard sitting and controlling from the half guard. Tupper is not content to let Maellard control the position. Maellard performing his best blanket impression for a moment. Tupper wants to get back to full guard.

Maellard is figuring out what he wants to do next. Maellard wants to free his trapped foot but Tupper is holding on for dear life with his legs. Maellard seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Tupper does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. Tupper is trying to get back to full guard. Maellard passes into side control, despite Tupper's attempt to control the position.
Score +3 for passing guard: Tupper (4) vs (5) Maellard Tupper tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Maellard wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
That's eight minutes gone in the round. Tupper tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Maellard presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount! Score +2 for reaching mount: Tupper (4) vs (7) Maellard Maellard wants to take Tupper's back but he can't do it this time. Tupper wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back. Score +3 for taking back: Tupper (4) vs (10) Maellard Maellard is trying to stick to Tupper's back but Tupper is turning into Maellard. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Maellard's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Tupper. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Tupper (6) vs (10) Maellard Tupper trying to control but Maellard is working from the bottom. Tupper is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Maellard is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
That's nine minutes gone in the round. Maellard is trying to keep Tupper in close.
Tupper wants to control from the top but Maellard keeps moving. Tupper slips nicely into half guard. Tupper is keen to just control but Maellard is a slippery customer. Tupper tries to pass to full mount but Maellard defends it. Maellard trying to hold on to Tupper's head to control him but Tupper postures up.
That's ten minutes gone in the round. Maellard desperately trying to maintain half guard. Maellard is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Tupper is working for a submission of some sort.
Tupper passes to side control. Score +3 for passing guard: Tupper (9) vs (10) Maellard Tupper thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Maellard manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu! Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Tupper (9) vs (12) Maellard Maellard takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Maellard trying to control the action but Tupper is working from the bottom. Maellard tries to pass the half guard into mount. Tupper knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Maellard works his foot free and advances to mount. Score +3 for passing guard: Tupper (9) vs (15) Maellard
That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Tupper tries to get back to half guard but can't. Maellard is trying to take his opponent's back.
Maellard looking to control and managing it successfully. Tupper is desperately trying to improve his position but Maellard has a good base and remains in mount. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Maellard trying to control but Tupper is having none of it. Tupper working to try and regain half guard.
Maellard controlling his opponent. Maellard fails to advance to Tupper's back. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Tupper is squirming around, avoiding Maellard's attempts to control the action.
And that's the end of the fight! Maellard wins on points by 15 to 9. Pops Maellard is the new featherweight champion! An out of breath Pops Maellard thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career. Augustine Tupper was interviewed post fight and said 'No worries! Everyone knows that my opponent here has a bad habit of testing positive for PEDs and illegal recreational drugs, so I'm confident this fight will soon be ruled a "No Contest."
