The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Vasiliev shoots in for a double leg but Shinoda sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Vasiliev tries to close the distance and clinch but Shinoda swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Shinoda throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Vasiliev throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Shinoda. Shinoda lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Vasiliev circles away quickly and effectively. Shinoda throws a left and a right that both miss
and Vasiliev counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Vasiliev. Shinoda manages to break the clinch.

Shinoda throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Vasiliev. Mike Shinoda seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Shinoda keeps the fight on the outside. Vasiliev moves forwards but Shinoda connects with a nice, crisp jab. Vasiliev throws an overhand right that lands on Shinoda's shoulder, as Shinoda tries to avoid the shot. Vasiliev is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace. A frustrated look appears on Shinoda's face as he tries to break the clinch. The referee is keeping an eye on Vasiliev - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Shinoda is trying to break the clinch but Vasiliev has him pressed against the cage. Vasiliev pulls guard. Vasiliev is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Shinoda throws a big right hand that misses.

Shinoda looking to sit in guard and control but Vasiliev gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Shinoda is trying to control the position but Vasiliev postures up. Vasiliev is looking to work some ground and pound but Shinoda has wrist control.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Vasiliev missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Shinoda moves out of range of the body kick from Vasiliev.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Vasiliev tries to clinch but Shinoda is having none of it. Shinoda tries to bum rush Vasiliev with a series of wild strikes but Vasiliev uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Shinoda falls off balance throwing a combination
and Vasiliev counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Vasiliev. Vasiliev must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Vasiliev is breathing heavily. Shinoda has control of Vasiliev's left arm, preventing Vasiliev from doing any damage.

The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. van de Reuzel looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from van de Reuzel! charlie takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head. van de Reuzel lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear charlie down.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Moriendi will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Moriendi is defended easily by Bates. Moriendi shoots in for a takedown but Bates shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Horrible takedown by Moriendi or perhaps it was just good defense by Bates which made him look bad. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ars Moriendi.
