The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice takedown defense from Liam. No joy for Assad on that attempt.

Liam closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Liam lands in his opponent's guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Assad changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Liam tries to avoid it but Assad manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Liam to the ground. Liam escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Assad can do anything to dispel that myth.
Liam landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Brother Assad has got the better of the ground game so far.
Liam seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Assad is trying to get back to full guard.
Assad slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Liam throws a strike but Assad rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Liam can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Assad controls the pace.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Assad drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Assad jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Assad wants to get up but he can't break Liam's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Assad might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Liam haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Assad advances to half guard.
Assad looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.

Assad postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Liam to stand up.
Liam shoots in looking for a takedown. Assad tries to sprawl out of it but Liam keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Assad manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Liam throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Assad was covering up waiting for the punch and Liam finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Assad working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Liam doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Liam manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Liam knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Assad on the ground.

Liam gets to his feet and stands over Assad, holding his ankles. He dives in with a big left hand that connects! Assad felt that one! Liam unloads more punches and elbows and this one is over! The ref has dived in to save Assad from any more punishment!
