PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Hugeo Deck (ranked 4524 p4p, 0 weight class) and Wesley Shutes (ranked 4444 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Hugeo Deck!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Wesley Shutes!
The judges for this bout are Phil Schofield, Colin Fotheringham and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shutes fails with a takedown attempt.

Deck feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Shutes is trying to control the position but Deck postures up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Deck controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Deck lands a couple of elbows.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Shutes keeping full guard, as Deck tries to pass.
Shutes pulls Deck in close to his closed guard and prevents Deck from doing any damage or advancing position.
Deck slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Shutes is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Deck is aware though and is defending well.
Deck passes into half guard.
Deck controlling the action here.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Deck is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Shutes has managed to free his arm - good work.
Deck tries to stand but can't do so whilst Shutes controls his leg.
Deck is figuring out what he wants to do next.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Shutes blocks a low kick nicely.
Shutes throws a nice head kick!
Deck motions for Shutes to come forward. Deck throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.

Shutes clinches with his opponent.

Shutes changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Deck fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Deck misses with a head kick.
Shutes scores with a head kick.

Deck dives in and scores a takedown into Shutes's guard.
Shutes is looking to stand back up but Deck counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Shutes.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Shutes is trying to maintain the position but Deck is very close to passing his half guard.
Deck wants to stand but Shutes has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Deck looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Shutes with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Deck works his foot free and advances to mount.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Deck cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Deck bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Shutes wants to get back to his feet but Deck is dominant here and he's now got Shutes's back!

Deck is working hard for the rear naked choke here.

Deck patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here?
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Deck keeps control of the position as Shutes tries to break free.
Shutes is covering up but some of the strikes from Deck are getting through and doing damage.

Shutes tries to roll but Deck sticks to his back.

Shutes rolls, trying to escape but Deck keeps control of the position.

I would not like to be Shutes right now.

Shutes is trying to get back to his feet but Deck has full control of the position and if anything, Shutes has just worked his way into a worse spot.
Shutes trying to control the position but Deck manages to sink in the hooks.

Deck is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Shutes is defending well though. Deck let's go of the attempt for now.
Shutes is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
Deck's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Deck is working the ground and pound here and the referee is taking a close look at Shutes. He must escape soon or this one will be stopped.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Deck lands a shot to the body.
Deck is not going to allow Shutes to sit and survive in this position.

Deck lands a punch that was close to the back of the head but the ref thinks it's OK.
Deck lands an elbow to the side of the head.
Shutes trying to control the hands but Deck breaks the grip.
Shutes trying to get back to his feet but Deck is in full control for now.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Shutes tries to escape the position.
Shutes is trying to remain composed but Deck is hammering down strikes to the side of his head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!



Shutes clinches up with Deck and pushes him back against the cage.
Shutes lands with a right to the head.
Deck wants to take the fight to the mat but Shutes manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Shutes is trying to pull guard but Deck has him pressed against the cage.
Deck tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Deck breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Shutes fails with a takedown attempt.
It looked like Deck was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Shutes tries to clinch but Deck moves out of range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Shutes shoots in looking for a takedown. Deck tries to sprawl out of it but Shutes keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Deck manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Hugeo Deck has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Wesley Shutes.
Shutes tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Shutes tries to clinch there but Deck circles away.
Shutes shoots in but Deck avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Shutes wants to clinch.
Shutes fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Shutes takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Deck decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Deck wants to work for an arm triangle but Shutes is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Deck winds up and cracks Shutes with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Deck is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Shutes can do to turn this around?
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Deck is looking for a kimura here.
Well, if Deck is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Deck scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

Shutes has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Deck is working away from the top position though.

Deck is trying to work for a kimura but Shutes is defending well.
Deck is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Deck is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Deck perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Shutes tries to clinch but Deck moves out of range.
Shutes shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Deck as he jumps to the side.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Deck shoots in and gets a takedown into Shutes's guard.
Wesley Shutes has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Hugeo Deck is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Shutes has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Deck can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

And that's the end of the fight!
Hugeo Deck showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Deck, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
