PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Capt Sully (ranked 1494 p4p, 167 weight class) and Gemechu McKraken (ranked 1379 p4p, 156 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Capt Sully!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Gemechu McKraken!
The judges for this bout are Fedor Mirinova, Vladimir Khabensky and Dmitry Maklakov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sully stalks McKraken and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into McKraken's face. McKraken staggers backwards, shaken.
McKraken misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Sully.
McKraken dips to his left and cracks Sully with an uppercut!
McKraken has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.

McKraken closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
McKraken misses with the ground and pound.
McKraken throws an elbow but Sully slips to the side and avoids it well.

McKraken is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Sully is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Sully is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, McKraken asserts his dominance and retains side control.

McKraken goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Sully rolls with the submission and now he's on top in McKraken's guard! Nice work there by Sully!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

McKraken throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.

That's one minute gone in the round.

McKraken is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Sully defends well.
Sully trying to control but McKraken is working from the bottom.
McKraken manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Sully manages to get himself to full guard.

Sully looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

McKraken drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Sully dives on top into guard.

Sully wanted to stand there but McKraken had control of the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Sully preventing the sweep.
Sully advances to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McKraken is pressing down on Sully's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Sully wants to stand but McKraken is controlling his posture from full guard.
Sully tries to free his leg and advance position but McKraken is retaining full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now McKraken is on top in guard.

McKraken content to stall in guard here.
McKraken connects with a couple of short punches.
McKraken content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
McKraken scoring with punches to the head and body.
McKraken chips away with some ground and pound.
McKraken throws an elbow that misses. Sully uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in McKraken's guard. Nice move by Sully!

Sully throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
McKraken wants to sweep here but Sully controlling him for the moment.

Sully stands up from McKraken's guard - Sully perhaps looking for a knockout.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
McKraken misses with a hook. Sully ducked under it nicely.
McKraken looks to land a left hand but Sully moved out of range nicely.
Sully throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
The fighters circle momentarily. McKraken darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Sully tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but McKraken paws at him with a jab and circles away.
McKraken tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
McKraken swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Sully throws a sloppy head kick and McKraken moves out of range easily.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Sully is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by McKraken.
McKraken defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Sully.
Sully slips a jab and a cross from McKraken.
McKraken throws a looping overhand right but Sully ducks down to avoid it.
McKraken fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
McKraken is trying hard to land a takedown here. Sully sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Sully shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts McKraken as he jumps to the side.
A combination from Sully does no damage.
Sully takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.
McKraken lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gemechu McKraken dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


McKraken scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Sully doesn't seem bothered though.
Sully fails with the takedown.
Sully throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and McKraken counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
McKraken passes the guard and advances to mount!
McKraken is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Sully wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.

McKraken with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
McKraken lands a heavy elbow.
McKraken has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

McKraken goes for an armbar but Sully turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Sully.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Sully sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Sully has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Sully preventing the sweep.

McKraken has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Sully can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
McKraken wants to sweep but no luck.
Sully throwing strikes from guard but McKraken blocks nicely.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Sully wants to control from the top but McKraken keeps moving.
McKraken working a defensive guard here.

McKraken has his feet on Sully's thighs here. He's pushed Sully off and worked for a very quick armbar from the bottom! He's flipped onto his stomach and he's cranking hard on the arm! Sully screams in pain and taps out! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:39 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Gemechu McKraken!
After the fight, Gemechu McKraken was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
In defeat, Capt Sully stepped up to the mic, saying 'Retiring this sorry ass.'.
