PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Norman Young (ranked 6515 p4p, 0 weight class) and Zhoujiangcuo Wong (ranked 2836 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 22 - 0, fighting out of New York, Norman Young!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 10 - 1, fighting out of New York, Zhoujiangcuo Wong!
The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, Chad Campbell and Franklyn Lucas.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wong throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
A little feinted left hand from Young on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Wong pulls out of a head kick attempt.
It looked like Young was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Young's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Young duly obliges.


It looks like Zhoujiangcuo Wong has been cut.
Wong throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Wong throws a sloppy head kick

and Young counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Young.
Wong looks winded!
Wong prevents a takedown attempt there.
Young is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Wong is defending well.
Wong wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Young prevents Wong from breaking the clinch.
Wong has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Young ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Young no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Young looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

Young pushes Wong off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Young looking to score a takedown here. Wong is defending well but Young drives through and ends up in Wong's guard.
Young passes easily into side control. Nice work.
The referee asks Young politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Young prefers to stall for the moment though.
Young is trying to ground and pound but Wong uses the momentary lack of control by Young to regain half guard.
Young looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Young decides to stand and escape the position.
Young fails with a takedown attempt.

Wong throws a head kick that misses.

and Young counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Young slips a jab and a cross from Wong.

Young wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Wong, who protects the arm well.

Young stands up and we're back to a striking position.
A head kick by Wong misses
and Young counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Young shoots in for a takedown but Wong shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Young bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Wong felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Young slows the pace down.
Young tries to score with some ground and pound. Wong controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Wong scores with a head kick. Young tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.
Young shoots in looking for a takedown but Wong manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Young's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Young has taken the fight to the clinch.
Wong has had enough of the clinch but Young keeps him there for the moment.

Wong escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Young shoots for a double leg takedown but Wong sprawls well. He's pushed Young's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

The referee is keeping an eye on Young - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.

A frustrated look appears on Wong's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Young is trying to drag Wong to the mat but Wong just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Norman Young is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Wong lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.

Wong is looking to get back to his feet here but Young is keeping cool and he's managed to take Wong's back.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Young really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Wong.
Norman Young overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Young has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Wong would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Zhoujiangcuo Wong seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Young will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

Wong is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Young seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Wong for as long as he can get away with.

Norman Young showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Young, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
